For those who don't know, a lightning talk is a very short presentation, about 5 minutes in length. You can talk about anything Python related like a project you're working on, a library that you find interesting, or a resource that you think is helpful. If you have something you want to talk about for 5 minutes, please let me know. If you decide last minute, that's ok too, we'll probably have time. If you want to give a talk but don't know how, we have a guide: goo.gl/GdRz9H See you on the 26th! Message-ID: I've taught Python through Saturday Academy in various ways and have grown as a teacher as a result. There's nothing like the reality check of real kids in a real classroom. As a veteran of this program, I'd be happy to offer advice / coaching to anyone taking the position or having questions about my experience. Feel free to pass this on to others you thing might be interested / qualified. Here's a blurb on the position (temporary): === Come share your expertise with youth in your community. Saturday Academy is looking for programming instructors. We build classes around the instructor's expertise and schedule. Our classes are small (10-12 students), hands-on, and instructors can choose the grade range they are most comfortable teaching. Classes are held all over the Portland, Beaverton and Hillsboro area. Saturday Academy hires on a temporary, part-time basis and we do background check as adults are left alone with students. If you are interested in learning more about teaching for Saturday Academy please contact Eloise Koehler at eloise at Saturdayacademy.org and check out our website at http://www.saturdayacademy.org/more/be-an-instructor === Kirby Urner Oregon Curriculum Network http://www.4dsolutions.net/ocn/cp4e.html @thekirbster @psf_snake -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: I'm not actually coordinating the vacancy though Rachel. I suggest you convey your willingness to Eloise directly if you haven't yet. Based on experience doing this, an assistant would be a great asset as inevitably if you're letting each student play with Python individually, they'll each get into something interesting and challenging and a 2nd pair of eyes with over the shoulder words of tech support (I let them stay in control of the keyboard and mouse) can help move things along wonderfully for all concerned. I'd like to try it with even more mentors in the room, like Apple does at Apple Store. I've offered to help in the background with curriculum ideas, having done Python teaching with Saturday Academy before. It's a nonprofit offering kids extracurricular science / math / arts drawing on talented adults in the area who enjoy sharing / teaching. Sounds great on paper, like an idea every city would implement (ditto Free Geek), but there's a lot of logistics involved, not to mention fundraising, which probably explains why the idea has not spread to every city. The Silicon Forest has been blessed with true visionaries e.g. Gordon Hoffman, eager to pass the torch and willing to make the investments. I've been in Portland since 1985 and have crossed paths with it in various chapters, always as a mentor (I'm not a chief sponsor financially). SA: helped match me up with a precocious apprentice coder in one chapter, to supplement his in-school studies. [1] I'm just starting a new chapter we could say e.g. I've never met Eloise in person, just by email so far. Anyway, great outfit. Thumbs up etc. Good experience, good on resume, a chance to try different things. I have lots of blog posts on what I've done with Python in the past.
