As discussed on python-dev. Assigned to Jeremy so it won't be forgotten. I'm not sure when the release is going to happen, but I'm going to be incommunicado for a while and I wouldn't want this patch to be lost because of that.

Don't forget to rerun 'autoconf' after applying.
