Wednesday's meeting attendee's were receptive and most were outwardly interested. I pitched the idea given that there are existing opportunities in the world of open-source software. There are a number of existing and popular projects that could be improved greatly using Python (a few are difficult to implement reliably, but could be a snap for end users using python) and where for one reason or another (mostly because of companies hiring the sponsors), the project's may be dieing off. A good way to approach this might be to: 1. First see who on the list is interested and can contribute time to a project. 2. Discuss possible projects and have the group of interested people pick one. 3. Submit high level designs. 4. Get started. So if you're interest in participating, we want to hear from you. -Charles On Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 7:29 AM, Jeff Hinrichs - DM&T wrote: > I've got the meeting notes up on the web, http://www.omahapython.org/ > make sure and email any corrections > > Thanks, > > -Jeff > > -- > Jeff Hinrichs > Dundee Media & Technology, Inc > jeffh at dundeemt.com > 402.218.1473 > web: www.dundeemt.com > blog: inre.dundeemt.com > _______________________________________________ > Omaha Python Users Group mailing list > Omaha at python.org > http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/omaha > http://www.OmahaPython.org > From mike at hostetlerhome.com Fri Aug 8 16:26:45 2008 From: mike at hostetlerhome.com (Mike Hostetler) Date: Fri, 8 Aug 2008 09:26:45 -0500 (CDT) Subject: [omaha] Meeting Notes In-Reply-To: <8f1052e50808080704r70338181te0e5d584b8fcc3e2@mail.gmail.com> References: <5aaed53f0808070529j7f2ba440xdd6b890607c841e8@mail.gmail.com> <8f1052e50808080704r70338181te0e5d584b8fcc3e2@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <36443.69.58.248.102.1218205605.squirrel@email.powweb.com> Count me in. Perhapse more will want to join as we keep going. Personally, I would like a project that is powerful, has a wide scientific & corporate appeal, and where implementing it in python could have significant advantages in simplifying it's implementation, use, and maintenance. I don't know if it's been done before, but on the top of that list could be an enterprise map-reduce architecture implemented soley in python; similar in function to google's implementation or hadoop's. We could call it hapy or pydoop :). The current implementations out there are powerful and popular, but require a singificant amount of research, testing, and issue solving within multiple technologies for the unininitiated; (ssh, java, bash, linux, various settings files, etc) -- as well as a multi-layered architecture to sift through when something goes wrong. It would be great to unify all of this in one solution that is easy to implement, use, and improve. It could have huge potential to be extremely popular and useful. We'll, I'm just one voice, and others have expressed an interest in certain projects (ChemChains, pygame, home automation). Given that there is interst in an opensource project, we should probably move on to an open request for specific projects and goals, and let the group discuss and decide. -CK On Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 10:18 PM, Jeff Hinrichs - DM&T wrote: > On Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 11:35 AM, Jay Hannah wrote: > > Charles Kaminski wrote: > >> So if you're interest in participating, we want to hear from you. > > > > Project I'd be interested in: > > - Anything pygame > > - Implementing ChemChains in Python > > http://jays.net/wiki/ChemChains_sandbox > > > > j > I too, would be interested in exploring this topic. > > -jeff > _______________________________________________ > Omaha Python Users Group mailing list > Omaha at python.org > http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/omaha > http://www.OmahaPython.org > From newz at bearfruit.org Mon Aug 11 23:45:57 2008 From: newz at bearfruit.org (Matthew Nuzum) Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2008 16:45:57 -0500 Subject: [omaha] Meeting Notes In-Reply-To: <8f1052e50808111028p3da4e002yeb2ab1c8480b38ec@mail.gmail.com> References: <5aaed53f0808070529j7f2ba440xdd6b890607c841e8@mail.gmail.com> <8f1052e50808080704r70338181te0e5d584b8fcc3e2@mail.gmail.com> <489C5E7D.807@jays.net> <489C75C0.6020201@jays.net> <5aaed53f0808102018h38c3603ck518c7371d110f7df@mail.gmail.com> <8f1052e50808111028p3da4e002yeb2ab1c8480b38ec@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: On Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 12:28 PM, Charles Kaminski wrote: > Personally, I would like a project that is powerful, has a wide scientific & > corporate appeal, and where implementing it in python could have significant > advantages in simplifying it's implementation, use, and maintenance.
