The version of datetime in 1.6 is quite broken. When 1.6 was released, I
thought it was probably ok because it had already passed whatever review
processes in 1.4, but this turned out not to be a good assumption. In the
documentation, I've labeled it as "new in 1.7" (which would change to the
actual release version later).
