Summary: Annoying edit lock message

Initial Comment:
I use Mozilla FireFox, and when my edit lock on a page
expires, I get an annoying blinking "Your edit lock on
XYZ has expired" message in the status bar, regardless
which tab I am looking at.

Could this message possibly be made less annoying somehow?

It has a reason why it is annoying. ;)

If it starts warning, you risk that somebody else also edits
that page and you have to manually merge stuff he saves
before you (if that happens, that is much more annoying).

Even if you are working alone in your wiki, you should SAVE
your work from time to time, or it all will be lost if your
browser crashes. Either use "save" button or at least
"preview" for doing that. After that, the edit lock period
will start again.

Another option is that you set edit locking time to a higher
value, so it will hit you later.
