In the last 48 hours both of our confirmed speakers for Monday have asked to cancel. Does anyone have a talk they'd like to present on Monday (7 Nov), and save the day?! There should be a good turnout according to the Meetup page numbers! I could present essentially by talking about its content. Whew! IF no one else has a talk to volunteer, I'll do a "live hacking" of putting up a package on PyPI *and* conda-forge. This is not a live demo, but a live *hack*, meaning I won't have something prepared. We'll figure it out together. It's my second time doing this, so at least I know I *can* do it. Could be potentially instructive. =) I hope to see you all soon! Good news :-) ... One of our cancelled speakers has now come back with a generous offer to give his talk anyway (in slightly abbreviated form). Even better, we now also have three other inspired souls who have volunteered to give short talks (about 10-15 minutes each). So it should be a lively night! The program is: ? Brad Nguyen: Applying Data Science to build MVP products for artwork recommendation ? Ben Finney: How to Make Mistakes in Python: book review ? Robert Layton: New features and gotchas in Pandas v0.19 ? Kristine Howard: Lightning talk: Ways to encode data in knitting When: 5.45pm for 6pm, Monday 7th November Where: VLSCI Seminar Room, Ground Floor, 700 Swanston Street, Carlton How to get there: Take a tram 5-10 mins north from Melbourne Central station. Dinner afterwards: pizza, or maybe dinner & drinks on Lygon I'll be overseas until Friday, so I'll unfortunately miss the event, but Sam will host the night and introduce the speakers. Have a great night! :-) Cheers, Ed -- Dr. Edward Schofield Python Charmers http://pythoncharmers.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... For those who enjoyed the presentation, ?How to Make Mistakes in Python? by Mike Pirnat is worth getting from O'Reilly Press. It is one of a large number of short-form books they make available at no charge, only the cost of registering on their site. -- \ ?Do unto others twenty-five percent better than you expect them | `\ to do unto you. Jason has joined us, and now... we are seeking an experienced developer to add to our team. Currently, we are more than two-thirds complete in building our career and education planning web platform. We looking for an experienced developer in the Melbourne-region who has worked on past Python web application projects, and also willing to be a co-founder. Some info about what we do... our platform matches users looking for study opportunities or jobs with education providers, recruiters, and role models. Our technology uses algorithms to plan out potential career paths for our users. Our concept is already validated by partnerships with education providers locally and abroad, including Deakin University, Navitas, and The University of California - Irvine. On the back end, you will be working with Jason, and Bianca, who's currently in Brazil. We're particularly interested in people keen on collaboration, providing quick feedback and code reviews to other teammates, and giving suggestions and guidance. We're also currently developing an algorithm for our career planning platform, so if you have an interest in algorithms, data science, and machine learning, that would be a plus. If you are interested, send me your resume. Sincerely, Jonathan Tan Jump! He will be demonstrating the Scram encrypted filesystem (written in Python) for his new Melbourne-based startup, Scram Software, including a demo of real-time streaming video decryption. He will also describe the journey he has gone through with Python in addition to the actual crypto experience -- topics such as Cythonising code to create redistributable objects, code obfuscation, continuous builds, and PyQt.
