I thought it was just a temporary change. It was an interesting meeting, but it seems to me the weak point continues to be the venues. Robot was erring towards being too noisy, too small and too neck crampy. HB is only a little better in that the space is a bit bigger. Having said that, finding a good venue is always difficult, and I don't think I currently have a better suggestion, short of maybe trying to lean on ThoughtWorks (they are on Collins St and host MXUG http://groups.google.com.au/group/mxug , which incidentally is next Wednesday). Anyway, just thought I'd put that out there... not sure how everyone else feels about it. Maybe beer is compensation enough?! I attended the London Python meetups for many years (when I lived over there) and they used to be pub only, mainly social & drinking (a lot of drinking, I gotta admit) with no formal talks. That was until ThoughtWorks volunteered some office space and so every 2nd or so London Python meetup would be held at ThoughtWorks with formal presentations by members & guests, followed by the obligatory pub session until late. I don't mind either current venue, although they both limit the growth of the meetups. If anyone knows any contacts within ThoughtWorks or similar companies (eKit?) that have an interest in Python perhaps you could ask them if they would be willing to host meetings. Well, given the resounding lack of response, I suppose it's just me. So I will look forward to future meetings at Robot or Horse Bazaar. :) cheers Brianna -- They've just been waiting in a mountain for the right moment: http://modernthings.org/ From mydnite1 at gmail.com Wed Oct 21 00:10:50 2009 From: mydnite1 at gmail.com (James Alford) Date: Wed, 21 Oct 2009 09:10:50 +1100 Subject: [melbourne-pug] Thanks for another great meeting! I have tried in the past to help organise events at bars/pubs etc, and it was the same set of problems. To get someone where they will treat your properly (i.e. listen to your requests regarding noise levels, not stuff you round by changing bookings etc) you basically need to pay. Otherwise, it's luck of the draw. Maybe we'll find somewhere better for a while, but in my experience it's always a running battle to get somewhere really good. The alternatives are venues like workplaces, schools, universities etc, which basically need someone with local knowledge to organise. My workplace isn't really appropriate. Also, it means that there are no beers, snacks etc and everything has to be BYO which can be a pain. I'm in full agreement about the shortcomings of pubs generally (robot Sushi included) but short on better ideas. I have one possible place but I've forgotten the name. I'll try to look into it next week... I just rang Torimatsu restaurant at 179 King Street between Bourke and Little Bourke. They have an upstairs dining room which they would let us have exclusively once a month between 6pm and 9:30pm. It would seat 30. They say 60 max but that would be a bit crowded and would include the bar area. There are strings attached. No charge for the venue but they would expect us to order a combined total of $26 worth of food and drinks per head. I presume that would be an average. Here are the food prices ... http://www.torimatsu.com.au/dinnermenu.html And a minor hitch. I have a projector but no screen and their walls are brown on one side and purple on the other. I have eaten there many times and have no hesitation recommending the food. They have a decent bar and good winelist too. If there are no immediate vetoes we need some volunteer city folk to check it out and help us decide. Mike Otherwise, it's luck of the > draw.
