The package system allows you to do a few things here:
>>> from Numeric import LinearAlgebra
>>> LinearAlgebra.inverse(a)
>>> from Numeric.LinearAlgebra import *
>>> inverse(a)
You could also abbrev LinearAlgebra to LA.
