Did you try using newlist's -q switch so that it doesn't pause for the 
operator to hit enter?

But I agree with everyone else... getting your system administrator to 
configure Exim as described on the Exim web page (or the earlier 
version of that text in the README.EXIM file) is definitely the way to 
go.
