I don't know of any other way.

I think that some such provision would be highly desirable (the whole
archive area needs work).

Consider the position a British list manager would be in, without shell
access, when a British list member demands for privacy reasons that a
message be removed.  Said list manager has no choice but to comply (or face
the fines and jail time that the wrath of Her Majesty's privacy czar brings
on), which basically would mean destroying the entire archive.
