Mmh... Any chance part of this ongoing saga could then be a setuptools
thing?  Since I absolutely avoid *ever* using easy_install, I have
almost none of its pollution, except for packages whose default
setup.py loads setuptools automatically.

I will refrain from jumping to conclusions on this,  but I'd really
like to know if this problem is related to setuptools...  The behavior
was completely incomprehensible, and your easy_install cleanup seems
to point in that direction, but that's not enough evidence to convict
it. Unfortunately ;)
