Co-hosts are working on drafting the projects, tutorials that participants can use. We'll be announcing the track this week, updating the website and opening up for tickets. 2. *Young Learners Workshop *(YLW) - YLW is a workshop to be hosted on 1st October for 50 students. This is a new track aimed to involve school students in the Indian Python community. - Registrations will be opened up next week. - Harsh Mittal [3] will be taking the workshop for the students. - We've identified Raspberry Pi 4 devices for the workshop and are looking for sponsor assistance. We'll be announcing the track this week, updating the website. This track is offered to students at no cost. 3. *Newcomer orientation* - We're bringing increased focus on Newcomers with a focused session for them (on community, contributions, participation etc.) and support at community booths. 4. *Software Exhibits* - These are Exhibits to showcase a software and/or a hardware-based Python-assisted software. - We are planning to pick a few from CFP submissions that don't need a talk category. 5. *Accessibility* - We've partnered with UserWay [4] for enhancing the reach of our website to more users via their widget. They've offered the widget at free cost to us. - We are working on making the conference sessions accessible by having live captions for the talks. - We will be encouraging speakers to follow the WCAG standard for the presentations. 6. *Extend support to underserved* - PyCon India is supporting students who expressed interest to participate in the conference but don't have the means. 7. *Know your peers!* - This is a fun physical data art installation planned at the registration desk. 8. *Python Express* - We have a few upcoming workshops planned for students. Apart from the above, we're working on a few ideas including one or two Python in Education sessions, Coffee Unconf (how to brew coffee), physical job boards. Happy to discuss further if anyone has questions. UserWay is an accessibility overlay and it doesn't make the website at all. Please check https://adrianroselli.com/2021/09/userway-will-get-you-sued.html and https://overlayfactsheet.com/. Also, if you really care about accessibility, why not just aim to make the website accessible instead of using an accessibility overlay? I am sure there are plenty of volunteers who would be willing to contribute towards that. Maybe even have more talks, devsprints to talk about accessibility so that developers can themselves create accessible websites rather than using tools with false promises and which make the experience worse for users with assistive needs. > - We are working on making the conference sessions accessible by having > live captions for the talks. > - We will be encouraging speakers to follow the WCAG standard for the > presentations. > > 6. *Extend support to underserved* > - PyCon India is supporting students who expressed interest to participate > in the conference but don't have the means. > > 7. *Know your peers!* > - This is a fun physical data art installation planned at the registration > desk. > > 8. *Python Express* > - We have a few upcoming workshops planned for students. > > Apart from the above, we're working on a few ideas including one or two > Python in Education sessions, Coffee Unconf (how to brew coffee), physical > job boards. > > Happy to discuss further if anyone has questions. > > [1] https://www.linkedin.com/in/anitharaman/ > [2] https://manav.co.in/about-me/ > [3] https://www.linkedin.com/in/harshmittal2210/ > [4] https://userway.org/widget/ > > Regards, > Bhanu > > _______________________________________________ > https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/inpycon > Mailing list guidelines : > http://www.shakthimaan.com/downloads/glv/presentations/mailing-list-etiquette.pdf > -- Saptak S Human Rights Centered Web Developer https://saptaks.website -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If you could refer to my email to Rishav, it explains the background behind the ticket prices in detail. Also, please refrain from saying that it's a "business-oriented" conference. We are not making any money out of it. It's a volunteer-driven event and all volunteers are putting a lot of time into pulling this event together so please don't demotivate them/us. Secondly, we strongly feel PyCon India is open to all and we did our best to make it accessible. I didn't see any of your concerns coming when I posted about choosing JNTUH as the event venue and now you are questioning why we chose JNTUH over Taj Vivanta. However, I'll still provide the explanation - - Taj Vivanta is a commercial place. Their food costs are around 2200/per plate/day, and on top of that, they charge rentals for the halls. It's clear how much more expensive that would have made our event. - We specifically wanted a venue that provided 4 halls. One main hall with a capacity for 1000+ attendees, and three others capable of accommodating around 300 each, given that we're planning a 4-track event. - Other than HICC(Novotel), we found no venues in Hyderabad that matched these requirements. - After extensive negotiations with HICC, their final quote was a significant 80 Lakhs for just the conference days, i.e., 30th Sep and 1st Oct. That's when we realized that, we can not take the risk of raising 80 lakhs from Sponsors this year and we had to find a venue that came at minimal cost to us to reduce the overall budget, hence we chose JNTUH. I hope that clarifies. P.S. - I'll be publishing our detailed budget sheet after the conference for transparency. - Sanchit -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We genuinely value feedback from community members like you, as it helps us understand the various perspectives. Let me try to address your worries and disappointment with some points below. 1. *Ticket Categories and Pricing*: - The price you mentioned is specifically for the late bird tickets, priced at 2500+GST. However, a breakdown of our tickets reveals that many tickets were offered at more affordable rates: - Early bird ticket (250 quantity) - 1200 INR + GST - Regular bird ticket (355 quantity) - 1500 INR + GST - Combo tickets for Conference + Workshops (200 quantity) - 2300 INR + GST - The late bird tickets represent the FINAL *140* for the conference days. 2. *Post-COVID Challenges*: - We've experienced increased logistic costs in the post-COVID time, starting from food, branding, accommodation, etc, Technically all costs have increased. - Also, as you might know, our event relies significantly on our generous sponsors. This year, because of slow market conditions, we've faced challenges, and secured only 16 sponsors so far after 2 months of effort, in contrast to the 50+ Sponsors for PyCon India 2019 and 2018. 3. *Event Expenses*: - Our intent is to make PyCon India accessible, and transparency is essential. Here's a high-level breakdown: - Food: Approx. 1200 INR/person for TWO days (includes lunch, breakfast, and high tea) - Swag: Around 410 INR+GST/person (t-shirts, cloth bags, stationery, lanyard, stickers, etc.) - Foreign keynote flights: 2.2 Lakhs - Keynote speakers' hotel stay: 1.1 lakh - Speakers' accommodation (40 Qty): 1.75 Lakhs - Speakers' travel (40 Qty): 2.4 Lakhs - Speakers + Sponsors Dinner (100 Qty): 1 Lakh - Finance Partner Expense: 5-6 Lakhs - AV Setup for 3 days including Sponsor Stalls: 10 Lakhs - Branding including Banners/Standees/Signages (4 days): 1 Lakh 4. *Student Tickets*: - We are actively looking into providing discounts for students who reach out to us at tickets at in.pycon.org. While an explicit student discount is challenging due to our budget. 5. *Comparison with Other Conferences*: - For context, you might find it helpful to compare our ticket structure with other conferences: - GopherCon India 2023 - React India 2023 - DevOps Days BLR 2023 - DOIS 2023 - KCDBLR Tickets We are doing our best to make PyCon India affordable for everyone, but as you might understand from the above stats we are tight on budget this year and we don't have a lot of Sponsor Funds to reduce costs on attendees. By the way, I am also attaching an image for ticket prices we had in PyCon India 2019, Please do check, it seems 2023 event tickets are very much on the same lines, even after 4 years and post covid. I hope this email clarifies the reasoning and the context behind the ticket prices. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any further questions or concerns. P.S. - I am happy that you brought this up, this gives us an opportunity to clarify to the larger community about the ticket prices.
