Please visit https://in.pycon.org/2019/submit-a-proposal.html to submit your proposal. Regards Rengaraj From anandpillai at letterboxes.org Mon Jul 1 02:57:42 2019 From: anandpillai at letterboxes.org (Anand B Pillai) Date: Mon, 1 Jul 2019 12:27:42 +0530 Subject: [Inpycon] Special Track - ML/AI Message-ID: <763ae5ec-5c04-e6b9-f6f1-48ba44ccd085@letterboxes.org> Looking at the number of submissions to the CFP and the ones that cover ML/AI and Big Data, wonder if it makes sense to experiment with a separate track for these in the upcoming PyCon. Reasons 1. Many of these talks are specialized - trying to cover A,B and C or using A,B in the context of C etc. Judging them from a perspective of the general talk track may do an injustice to (what may become) some good/specialized talks. I have been a CFP reviewer and the thinking sometimes is, "Hey, this can be picked up from an article on the Internet" or "This is too specialized for PyCon". However with the explosion of research in the field and the things to talk about, this kind of generic approach may not be valid any more. I think it is time to start bucketing these talks out of the generic talks bucket. 2. The "jarring" effect - This is something which I feel when I am sitting in hall in PyCon listening to say a talk on Decorators and Metaclasses and suddenly the next talk is on "How GAANs used for Deep Learning using Superlative Lyapuanov Regression has a High Recall" (purely illustrative, AFAIK no such talk exist). You often feel out of context or a "Hey, I dont belong here" feeling. So specialized talks should have their specialized place and perhaps their own specialized scoring. 3. The "Data" crowd - I guess with AI and ML talking over daily computing algorithms on a daily basis, the crowd which comes to listen to talks/workshops on data is going to only increase so it maybe a good idea to start listening to them. PyData conferences are on the increase but AFAIK there is no pan India PyData conference yet so closest I know is PyCon India itself. -- Regards, --Anand ---------------------------------- Software Architect/Consultant Founder & Director, Anvetsu Technologies Pvt Ltd (OPC) https://www.anvetsu.com http://twitter.com/skeptichacker -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... We kept discord only for volunteer communiction but there were following issues - - Lot of people were not familar with Discord platform - Discord lack some basic features like 'reply in thread mode' etc - Pinning of message is not very straight forward - Volunteers joined discord but lot of them were not active because - - either they didnt want to have another IM platform installed - or they didnt find the platform easy to use - When we reached closer to event, we ended up having a WhatsApp group for onsite volunteers, though discord could have worked if it was everyone's first choice Secondly, we created a Slack workspace only for participants, which I think worked pretty well and more than 1000 people joined it. So, I'd suggest not to introduce a new platform and instead stick to something which is already popular among people and easy to use. Slack/Telegram could be a good choice as its quite popular among people and lot of people may already be using it. Also, I think a SINGLE platform shall be used for both participants and volunteer communication, that also help us avoid sharing the same info at multiple places. The concerns raised are listed below. 1. The limit on the search history. 2. To use / or not to use previous year's channels. And here is our take on this. For the first problem, Zulip has agreed to drop the limits for PyCon India organization. For the second problem, as pointed by previous years organizers, Discord is not preferrable, so we wouldn't want to go with it. That leaves us between Slack and Zulip. Given that Zulip is opensource (including the mobile app), and there are no limits imposed (Slack has a search history limitation), and there is a possibility of self-hosting (with data migration) in the future, we think that Zulip is a better choice in the long run. Keeping this in mind, this year we are providing space for communities to promote themselves and to present their work, through community posters. The poster session will be a 1-hour post lunch session on the first day of the conference. There are no other parallel tracks scheduled during that slot. Apart from the regular technical posters we will be having community posters, as well, as part of the poster session. If your community would like to take part in this please submit your proposal at https://in.pycon.org/cfp/posters-2019/proposals/ Indicate the "Proposal Section" as "Community", while submitting your proposal. There are two different poster types: 1. Technical Posters - for presenting projects and insights on various topics 2. Community Posters - for user groups / meetup groups to promote their work Here are few good reasons to present a poster: 1. Posters offer the opportunity to *engage with attendees* interested in the same subject and application as yourself. You might strike up a conversation with someone about your poster that may lead to future collaborations or even a job offer! 2. If you are new to conferences, or if you are intimidated about doing a talk in front of huge audience, posters are for you. Posters are a *great way to test the waters*, and can be stepping stone for your next talk at a conference. 3. The *entire conference attendees is available* during the poster session, as there are no other tracks scheduled in parallel. This makes it better than the talk sessions, where there are multiple concurrent tracks, and attendees can only attend one of them. 4. A poster presentation is a good way to disseminate your work, particularly if your *topic or project falls within a narrow field of specialization*. It also gives you the opportunity to actively engage with others during the conference in a way that networking alone does not, since by its very nature the poster defines the topic of conversation. 5. Another good reason to present a poster is that you can expect to receive compliments on your work and critiques that can help you in the future. An insightful, *impartial discussion of your work by a peer* can often provide ideas for improving your work downstream. In short, poster presentations provide value, both for attendees who discuss your poster content with you, and for yourself because of the opportunities highlighted above. If this has got you interested, head to https://in.pycon.org/cfp/posters-2019/proposals/ for more details and to submit a poster proposal. We might want to use the existing infrastructure Python Express, to bridge workshop requirements with trainers. If you have some existing tried and tested approaches / slides / code, please do share them. This can be used as a starting point by the other trainers.
