Looking at <https://us.pycon.org/2014/community/sprints/> "PyCon
Development Sprints are four days of intensive learning and
development on an open source project of your choice, in a team
environment. It's a time to come together with colleagues, old and
new, to share what you've learned and apply it to an open source
project."

This is by definition a bit different from online competitions which
was one of the thrusts of your proposal.

Organization and success of sprints depend on : [1] identifying
projects [2] identifying those who will wrangle the sprints [3]
interested participants and, [4] some idea of what could constitute a
definition of a successful sprint. That should not be too hard to come
by.
