I have been providing patched files at 
http://www.info.ucl.ac.be/~dooms/python/IDLE_patch.zip for nearly two years.
Note these files are quite old but I have been using them in classroom 
whitout problems with a recent python2.3.
I think they might work as well with python2.4  alltough I didn't test that.
