I've been working as a cybersecurity researcher at DA-IICT under Prof. Manik Lal Das since a year. I've taken master level courses in Cryptography and Security Protocols, and have many projects as well. I'm well versed in C, Java, and Python. I've published 2 research papers in international conferences in the domain of cybersecurity. The details of my papers are as follows: [1] "MalDetec: A Non-Root Approach for Dynamic Malware Detection in Android ? in International Conference on Information System Security-2017, IIT-Bombay, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Dec 2017 [2] ?Auditing Access to Private Data on Android Platform ?, in International Conference on Distributed Computing and Internet Technology-2018, KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India, Jan 2018 Now, I want to contribute to open source pertaining to the same field, and hence I've been exploring about it. I stumbled upon your organization and was quite impressed by varied branches of Python Software Foundation, especially Kivy Framework, which I've worked with before. In my first research paper, I propose a tool(MalDetec) which uses a network traffic analysis to detect malicious URL accesses in android without root-privilege requirements. I used python to make this tool because of its rich library support and easy network traffic analysis. I consulted the python-for-android open source project and hence used the Kivy framework to design my tool. My whole research paper revolves around malware detection, with Python and Kivy being at the core of it. Having said that, I would be really grateful if you can provide me some work and hence an opportunity to contribute to your organization. Eagerly waiting for your reply. PFA my resume. Hi Alok, Python has a *lot* of different projects organized under different sub-orgs. Each project has different requirements listed on their pages. You should look through the sub-orgs to find ones that suit your talents. The sub-org info pages are here: http://python-gsoc.org/#ideas Note that figuring out what projects might suit your talents and interests is part of how you demonstrate that you're ready for GSoC, so if you're serious about making a good impression, this is your first task! There's no right or wrong answer to what you *want* to do. There's a getting started section here that you may also find useful when it comes to more coding-related tasks: http://python-gsoc.org/#gettingstarted Good luck! Do not send the same content to every project. Or I should say, the content in your email is too general. Please think over and contact only a few organizations that you would probably contribute. 2. PSF is an umbrella organization. That means it has many sub-orgs with various aims. Details: http://python-gsoc.org/ 3. If you want to work with PSF, follow the link on the website above and select a few sub-orgs that you may interested in. Read their instructions on their requirements and their potential ideas, and decide one sub-org you may go to. 4. Contact the sub-org and send your CV. Do not afraid of lack of experience in your CV. Maybe in late March before the deadline, your potential mentor will tell you how much possible you will be selected into their project. 5. Do not wait until the deadline. Ill that anyway help me for GSoC ? If you want to improve your chances of selection, the #1 thing you need to do is talk to your potential mentors, discuss your ideas with them, and make sure to listen carefully to their feedback and make changes they suggest. Secondly, if you're not really familiar with a project, you're probably going to have a higher chance of acceptance if you start by reading all the topics they've proposed. These are things that the project wants and is willing to commit resources to, so proposing something based on those ideas gives you an advantage. It's not the only path, but it might be the easier one! Finally, read all the info we've provided on getting started and writing an application. It starts here on our ideas page: http://python-gsoc.org/index.html#gettingstarted And you probably want to pay particular attention to the instructions given in our application template http://python-gsoc.org/studenttemplate.html Best of luck! This mailing list has some time delay. 2. Share your proposal directly to the SciPy community and your mentors, not the general Python GSoC community. 3. There are only a few hours to the deadline, so please get the feedback from your mentors as soon as possible. Once you submit it to Google, the document will be permanent and you may never change it again. 4. Write your blog posts in English. If my memory is correct, this is the rule of GSoC. 5. Instead of writing the whole structure of your class, I suggest you to write only the APIs that could be called from the outside. 6. I suggest you to leave the time for documentation every month, or you will forget about what you have written. Best regards, Huang Hongye From: GSoC-general On Behalf Of ? ?? Here's the thing about open source software: most of us are just random volunteers. Outside of GSoC, there is nothing special you need to do to "sign up" you just show up and start doing things. Projects have bug lists and wishlists of stuff to do. If people like what you're doing, they'll use it, and if they don't sometimes they'll be able to help you transform it into stuff that's more generally useful. You don't need to apply, just find a project that interests you and start writing some code (or docs, or draw logos, or do usability testing or whatever). Work with people as peers and strive to do good work. :) I don't know that aiming for organizations doing gsoc is an ideal strategy, since you might do just as well working with an organization that isn't quite is busy, but really just find a group that interests you so you'll stick with it. We've got an article on picking a good organization to work with here: http://python-gsoc.org/faq.html#choosing And we've got some suggestions on where to get started here: http://python-gsoc.org/#gettingstarted But basically, just start fixing bugs and doing stuff and see how it goes. You've got this. :) Terri From mbansal063 at gmail.com Wed Oct 10 10:37:10 2018 From: mbansal063 at gmail.com (Mayank Bansal) Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2018 20:07:10 +0530 Subject: [GSoC-general] Introduction Message-ID: Hello everyone! Typically, you'll choose one of their ideas and work with a mentor to create a project proposal that's good for both you and your chosen open source community. Sometimes, projects are open to new ideas from students, but if you propose something new make especially sure that you work with a mentor to make sure it's a good fit for your community. Unsolicited, undiscussed ideas are less likely to get accepted. Note that Python is an "umbrella organization" which means that our team is actually a group of python projects that work together to do Google Summer of Code. If you're going to apply with us, you'll need to choose from one of those teams, because that defines which mentors will be helping you with your applications. *Applications without any sub-org and mentor to evaluate them will be rejected.* You can work with more than one sub-org while you're figuring out what you want to do, but you can only accept one job offer. Here's some resources so you can read up more on how to be an awesome student: - The GSoC student Guide -- This is a guide written by mentors and former students. It covers many questions that most students ask us. Please read it before asking any questions on the mailing list or IRC if you can! New students in particular might want to read the section Am I Good Enough? - Google's list of resources -- Note especially the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) which does in fact answer 99% of the questions we get on the main GSoC IRC channel. - Python's SummerOfCode/Expectations also talks about what Python in particular is looking for in its students. - Python's Summer of Code Frequently Asked Questions answers the questions that we most often get about Python's projects.
