Since then, almost all the times, I have seen mentors requesting the contributors to do a "minor but very important" thing to do, *fix their code style*. Sometimes the contributors are very beginner and the reviewers have to manually comment every line with PEP8 issues. We understand that the Pull Request author must fix the style on their side before submitting the PR, but we know that people don't do that all the times. Some libraries have the option of adding linter to the Travis CI itself. But seeing the entire build fail only because of a missing whitespace does not seem to be a clever choice. And if there is a green tick outside, the PR author is never going to open it up and see the lint results! Keeping these things in mind, I have created something called PEP8 Speaks [1] and I would love to hear the feedback from the Python community. It works only for public repositories as of now. I would also like to know why or why not would you be using this in future. Find an organization that you're interested in and that hopefully thinks your idea is worth refining. Since you didn't specify anything about your idea, we can't really help you with that, so you'll have to give folk here a bit more to work with if you want help with that part, or start asking organizations individually. 2. If you're planning to put in an application, then you will eventually need a code sample, so you should try to fix some issues for the organization you choose. This doesn't have to be the first thing you do with them, though. Remember, you MUST find an organization interested in your idea if you want to be hired, so you'll need to pay close attention to what mentors tell you when you talk to them about your idea. If they aren't excited about it, you aren't very likely to get hired. Don't despair if you find that you're not getting a lot of interest, though -- it can be very hard for first-time students to know what a project wants and needs, and that's why we have ideas pages to guide you to something that you know they want. If you aren't finding a mentor for your personal project idea, you should pick one from their list and try working on that as a base instead. Hi, I'm the org admin for Python and I have not heard from PyDy yet as to whether they want to participate this year. I'm expecting to hear from a number of groups this week and next, but so far only MyHDL has confirmed interest. You can always see which projects have expressed interest and their current status here: http://python-gsoc.org/#ideas And don't forget that Google doesn't make its organization selections until the end of February, so none of us know for sure if we're participating until then! Note that this is a general GSoC list, what you want to do is to propose your project on the distutils-sig mailing list and ask for feedback and if anyone is willing to mentor you. If you find a mentor, it requires pip as a project to sign up for GSoC under the PSF umbrella (which it has never done before AFAIK). Not all the projects are on github, but each of our sub-orgs has their own getting started pages to tell you where the code is and how they want new developers to start. Before the friends have told me to participate in the GSOC biggest gain is to understand the meaning of open source. I have been using the open source project, only to ask, do not know the contribution. Now, with the help of GSOC, I hope I will be able to participate in open source through GSOC, and I will continue to contribute to the open source community even after the end of the GSOC. Because the deadline has been very close, so I directly cut into the title is good. What is some of my doubts: 1. Are you listing the project is not said by the mentor to provide a general approach and then we go to achieve, or let us to achieve their own. If it is their own proposal that they need to contact the potential mentor to discuss the feasibility of such things? 2. Can you choose this event by your decision or Google? 3. If you choose to provide the subject, then the mentor to choose what is the standard? 4. The next time we should not go directly to the corresponding mentor? Before I made this e-mail, I checked a lot of relevant information, and even gave me a letter to write to your template. But I am a relatively straightforward, straightforward person, so I went straight into the subject. I believe that my question is that all the students who participate in the most fundamental and most want to know the answer. When I receive your reply I will immediately follow the appropriate answer to ask yourself, ready. I am from China, so and the United States (most organizations should all be in the United States) have the time difference, may not even reply, which is why I like to use the mailbox and do not like to use IRC (in fact the most important thing is our school after 23.00 Stop network) If disturbed, but also forgive me I hope you can reply to me as soon as possible. I've done a separate project that relates to computational linguistics / NLP before called Prhymer but I want to get more in depth with anything relating to NLP. Are there any sub-orgs that are looking for NLP work (particularly that in metaphor processing)? Regards, Thomas Lisankie -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I think you might have gotten an answer to this via another channel, but for anyone else who's wondering... The sub-orgs listed are the only orgs where we know we have good people on hand who are willing to mentor right now. If you want to work with another group who is *not* listed there, you would need to convince them to sign up to work with us and provide at least 3 mentors for that sub-org (as in, experienced developers who are familiar with the project and willing to commit many hours to working with students). Since our deadline for org signups was March 3rd, they'd have to build a pretty impressive case for this being worth a very late exception. It's not *impossible* for someone to do this, but it's highly unlikely at this stage in the game. Applications that don't have mentors willing to work on them will be rejected, because there's no way we can accept a student (no matter how good!) if we don't have mentors for the project to make it successful. This is probably *the* worst time to try to get started, because our mentors are busy with the first few weeks of the students from 2017, and most of the easy issues are pretty picked over from this year's applicants. So do keep that in mind before getting discouraged! If you haven't already seen it, we've got some generic advice here that includes how to find beginner issues on your own: http://python-gsoc.org/#gettingstarted Python is a umbrella org, so there's a *lot* of different bug trackers for you to try. Do some searches for bugs marked "easy" and "beginner" but if that doesn't pan out (and it's less likely to right now) you might want to focus on reproducing other people's bugs, writing new tests, or trying to bridge any gaps in documentation. Since you're a bit less likely to be able to find someone who can help walk you through right this week, think of this as a great opportunity to showcase your ability to work independently and do your own research, both of which will make you an attractive candidate when you apply next year. There's no timeline for 2018 announced yet; usually Google does that after the current year's students wrap up. (Last year they announced on October 10th, for example.) You can watch for that announcement on their Open Source blog under the "GSoC" tag: https://opensource.googleblog.com/search/label/gsoc Typically, the dates shift a bit every year, but are within around a month of the previous year. I assume they do that intentionally to help deal with the many different international school schedules. I usually start updating the Python-specific pages in November and December, and sub-orgs start contacting me in late January and February depending on Google's timeline. Most of our mentors are pretty busy with their students for GSoC 2017, so you'll find it a bit harder than usual to find help for the next few months. But if you'd like to get a head start on open source contributions, most projects accept new contributors year round, just focus on fixing bugs and don't worry about the GSoC aspect of it right now. Contributing to *any* open source project will help you when it comes time to start thinking about a GSoC application in February or so. There's a getting started guide here: http://python-gsoc.org/#gettingstarted Good luck! Probably the actual application period for GSoC will be around February/March of next year. Keep an eye on Google's blog for the announcement.
