Message-ID: <56B057AF.8010800@toybox.ca> We've got our first ideas page from the fine folk at Dipy! Interested in science, health, algorithms and python? Dipy might be an interesting sub-org for you! Dipy is a free and open source software project for computational neuroanatomy, focusing mainly on diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) analysis. It implements a broad range of algorithms for denoising, registration, reconstruction, tracking, clustering, visualization, and statistical analysis of MRI data. They worked with us last year, so you're getting a chance to work with mentors who've got some experience with the program, which often makes things go more smoothly! Check out their ideas page here: https://github.com/nipy/dipy/wiki/Google-Summer-of-Code-2016 And don't forget that it's still a work in progress. Speaking of works in progress, I've also updated the main Python GSoC page with a whole pile of new resources and information for students and mentors. Yes, you can still apply if you don't have a website. However, those students who are accepted will need to blog about their progress over the summer, so you'll need to use a blogging service or something to do that if you get an offer. (e.g. Dreamwidth, blogger.) We usually recommend people set it up before so they don't forget. Don't wait! - Quoting directly from the document: "If you have questions about whether your document is acceptable, don't ask on IRC or on public mailing lists, just upload it to the site. If it is not acceptable, we will ask you to upload a different document within a specified time frame. You will receive an email when your form has been approved." So definitely don't make the mistake many others have been making and ask on IRC about it. Good luck! Or can we apply for any idea that an organization is already > working on? In general, starting from something on the ideas page is the easier path and the one we recommend. The new idea thing can work if you're already a developer or long-time user for the organization so you know what they need and want. Since many GSoC applicants have very little experience, starting from the ideas page is your best bet! Organizations spend a decent amount of time preparing their ideas pages, so those ideas are they ones they know they have mentors interested in and will be useful for their overall organizational goals. If you'd like to add your own spin, try adding in a proposed related "stretch goal" that you'd like to do if you complete your work early. Many groups are willing to consider entirely new ideas too, but it's a harder path. Year after year, I see students propose ideas that no mentors want to do, that don't fit the overall goals of the project, or conflict with architecture decisions already made. To be honest, these usually get rejected in favour of things from the ideas page. So if you go this route, work closely with mentors to make sure it's a good fit, and pay close attention to what they tell you. Make any changes they ask for, and if they don't seem excited about it or they tell you it's not a good fit, then you're probably not getting accepted and you should try something else. Which sub-org are you working for? Each of them may have different ideas of what an ideal code sample looks like, and you should ask them first. But in general for all PSF applications, take a look at https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/ApplicationTemplate2016 which has more info than the one in Google's system (because the one in Google's system has pretty strict character limits) The code sample must be 1. something the developers can see, so somewhere public and not requiring an NDA or other serious licensing restrictions 2. related to your project. Ideally, it would be something submitted to the sub-org you're applying with, since that would demonstrate that you know how to set up your environment, submit an upstream patch, etc. Test code is fine if you don't have a bug to fix. If that's not possible for some reason that is agreed upon by your prospective mentors, choose code that at least demonstrates something related to the skills you will need to complete your chosen project. It doesn't have to be long, a dozen lines or so is fine as long as it provides useful information to your mentors about the skills you have. I don't know if IMS requires a pull request, but as long as the code is available publicly and relevant to the project, that's all that Python as the umbrella org requires. So these sound good to me, just check with your prospective mentors at IMS in case they want anything else. So, please > help me to get prepared. Hi Prasanth! We're still busy with GSoC 2016, so you're super early! I don't think GSoC 2017 has been announced yet. Assuming Google decides to do it, most projects doing GSoC aren't going to want to spend too much time talking 2017 yet. This time of year is especially bad since most orgs are still getting the 2016 students settled into coding (it's only been a couple of weeks). But luckily for you, most open source projects accept contributors year round, and any open source experience will help you be prepared for GSoC 2017. Just don't bug them about GSoC-related stuff and instead work on being a good contributor. Since you're interested in Python specifically, I recommend you start by reading the FAQ: https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/FrequentlyAskedQuestions In particular, the first question gives 7 things I usually recommend people do to get started. Here's the short version; there's a longer version at the link above: 1. Choose an organization to work with. 2. Set up your own development environment. 3. Start communicating with the developers. 4. Find some beginner-friendly bugs and try to fix them. 5. Find bugs and report them. 6. Help with documentation. 7. Help others. We probably won't have a page up for 2017 until after Google makes their announcement (Assuming they do!), but you can take a look at the 2016 page to see what people are working on this year, and it's worth reading the blogs too because the current students often have great information about what they're learning that could help you succeed next year. That page is here: https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/2016 And it contains a bunch of links on how to write a proposal and stuff. I recommend you read them all, since you've got lots of time right now! Good luck! It's a bit early for *us* to be thinking about 2017: we want to make sure we're concentrating on our 2016 students right to the end! So you won't see any new instructions up for 2017 for another few months. But that doesn't mean it's too early for *you*. What you can do right now is read the 2016 documentation and all the FAQs on the website, since getting started doesn't change too much year from year. The getting started section is here: https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/2016#Getting_Started But really, just read the whole page. Other than the dates and deadlines and what specific sub-orgs are involved, most of the information will apply to you. https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/2016 Good luck! Copyleft games is a separate organization from the Python Software Foundation this year, and probably will be next year too. You should talk to them on their IRC channel (#copyleftgames on irc.freenode.net) or whatever other contact methods they have listed. If you're interested in gsoc with us, it's a bit too early for 2017 information to be up, but you can read the 2016 info to get an idea of how to get started and what we expect: https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/2016 Good luck! That's up to your mentors -- if they're happy with your progress enough to overlook the missing blog posts, then you can still pass. If they're unhappy with your progress and the blogging shows a pattern of inconsistent work, then you're in trouble. Talk to them and make sure there's nothing else they're expecting from you! Our getting started page for 2017 is here: https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/2017 We won't have ideas pages up until February 2017 or so, so what you should be doing right now is getting to know a few organizations to see which groups might suit you best. First off, you'll need to narrow down which sub-organization you'd like to work with. Python is an "umbrella organization" which hosts around 20 sub-organizations, each of which has their own bug tracker. We don't know yet who's participating, but you can take a look at all the orgs that participated in 2016 and that's not a bad place to start: https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/2016 Don't worry too much about whether the project you choose will be in or not. You're so early that you've got plenty of time to change your mind, and *any* contributions will help your application and give you useful experience for GSoC. And don't forget to keep an eye on the page for the upcoming year. We'll start serious updates with information about projects and sub-orgs in January and February 2017. https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/2017 Terri From sahithikilaru at yahoo.co.in Thu Oct 13 02:15:46 2016 From: sahithikilaru at yahoo.co.in (Sahithi Kilaru) Date: Thu, 13 Oct 2016 06:15:46 +0000 (UTC) Subject: [GSoC-general] I wish to contribute References: <1523094602.1141240.1476339346206.ref@mail.yahoo.com> Message-ID: <1523094602.1141240.1476339346206@mail.yahoo.com> Dear mentors, I'm a software developer and I'm new around here. So you'll need to narrow down your question a bit before anyone can even start to answer you! You can see who participated last year here: https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/2016 But there's no guarantee that all those groups will participate again in 2017. Many groups won't be making that decision for sure until January or February of 2017 when they know which mentors will be available. But that's ok, any experience will help you be a better candidate for GSoC, so if that's your goal it doesn't matter which group you choose first. If you're overwhelmed with the choices, you might want to read this to help you get started: https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/FrequentlyAskedQuestions#How_do_I_choose_a_project_or_a_sub-org.3F Good luck! It's off-season for gsoc right now, so many mentors are enjoying the time off (and some are preparing for gci!) so responses will be slow. > I have knowledge of java, Python and c. > I found the sci kit learn project interesting. > I have no prior knowledge of machine learning but I am genuinely > interested in machine learning and would love to learn about it by > getting involved in the project. > So can you please give me a small task in this project or even any other > project, to help me get started. I hope you already found it, but the scikit learn mailing list is here, and they're the folk to ask for more information about scikit-learn tasks and ideas! https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/scikit-learn-general Do remember that you're months early for gsoc and most orgs won't be talking seriously about project ideas until January, but you can get involved as a volunteer anytime, so hopefully you can find a good way to get started even now. Since I believe many people use python to do > their ?deep? work/projects. We're hoping to participate in GSoC again in 2017, but whether we do actually get to participate is up to Google. We don't know for sure until Google makes their selections on February 27. You can see the whole timeline here: https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline We usually start getting project ideas in January and get more added until shortly before the student deadline, but you'll be able to see most of the projects when the announcement is made in late February. But that doesn't mean you can't be proactive about getting a project to happen! If you're interested in deep learning stuff, you should take a look at the organizations that participated last year and figure out which ones are most likely to do the sort of work you're interested in: https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/2016 I'd guess probably scikit-learn would be a likely one. You can also look at other orgs that haven't done gsoc but do deep learning, too, and see if they might be interested in doing GSoC. It's not unheard of for a group to join us just because a really promising student talked to them. :) Once you've narrowed down your list to a few groups that do deep learning, go look and see what things they might need in the deep learning space, and talk to them about what they need, and whether there's anything that you could help with. They aren't going to know what GSoC projects they'll be running right now, but they will know what things they'd like to build! Listen carefully to what people tell you, and make sure to work on things that are important to the project rather than only things you personally find interesting that others aren't as excited about (it's usually not too hard to find something that'll interest both you and others!).
