Nobody seems to be answering these requests, which is a shame but underscores my first point: Just Do It! (it's really up to the individual to get things going) Please be sure to add your group here: http://wiki.python.org/moin/LocalUserGroups And please considering posting to: http://python-groups.blogspot.com/ A good way to advertise initially is to find local Linux users groups and other similar groups, post to CLPA (*) and CLP (**), and perhaps use Meetup (***). (*) http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-announce-list (**) http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-list (***) http://www.meetup.com/cities/bd/ Hope that's helpful, and good luck with your new group! - Stephan From sdeibel at wingware.com Tue Oct 9 19:49:40 2007 From: sdeibel at wingware.com (Stephan Deibel) Date: Tue, 09 Oct 2007 13:49:40 -0400 Subject: [group-organizers] Starting and running a Python SIG In-Reply-To: <20071007230931.GA25856@localdomain> References: <20071007230931.GA25856@localdomain> Message-ID: <470BBF34.6030901@wingware.com> Eric Lake wrote: > I am interested in finding / starting a Python SIG / UG in my home town > (Lexington, KY). However you can sign up as interested in a group there as a way to get started. In general meetup.com seems to be a decent way to bootstrap a new group. You could also post to http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-list to see if you can find people interested in starting group. Without a leader it's not going to happen, but being the leader doesn't mean you do the speaking or presentations. It's just your job to organize, find venues, find presenters, etc. The best way to find out what to discuss is ultimately to ask the members what they're interested in. Usually, having someone present something brings in a lot more people than just meeting informally. A good start is to look around for any prominent Pythoneers that might be living near enough to your town to come and do a talk. Also, hands-on demos or tours of some library or technique are great if people bring laptops. BTW, browsing around on http://python.meetup.com/about/ and http://wiki.python.org/moin/LocalUserGroups is a way to see what other groups are doing as far as topics and format. You may be able to find some fairly reusable content/ideas that way. Hope this helps. - Stephan From noah.gift at gmail.com Tue Oct 9 19:50:58 2007 From: noah.gift at gmail.com (Noah Gift) Date: Tue, 9 Oct 2007 13:50:58 -0400 Subject: [group-organizers] [group-organizers Message-ID: > http://wiki.python.org/moin/LocalUserGroups > > And please considering posting to: > > http://python-groups.blogspot.com/ Anyone have a clever way of getting notes aggregated automatically via RSS from an existing blogger account? It seems like this would be an easier way than double posting for each meeting, as many groups already have an existing website. > A good way to advertise initially is to find local Linux users > groups and other similar groups, post to CLPA (*) and CLP (**), > and perhaps use Meetup (***). > > (*) http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-announce-list > (**) http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-list > (***) http://www.meetup.com/cities/bd/ > > Hope that's helpful, and good luck with your new group! > > - Stephan > _______________________________________________ > Group-Organizers mailing list > Group-Organizers at python.org > http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/group-organizers > From sdeibel at wingware.com Tue Oct 9 20:07:18 2007 From: sdeibel at wingware.com (Stephan Deibel) Date: Tue, 09 Oct 2007 14:07:18 -0400 Subject: [group-organizers] [group-organizers In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <470BC356.7050203@wingware.com> Noah Gift wrote: >> http://wiki.python.org/moin/LocalUserGroups >> >> And please considering posting to: >> >> http://python-groups.blogspot.com/ > > Anyone have a clever way of getting notes aggregated automatically via > RSS from an existing blogger account? Presumably the mechanism behind planet.python.org would work to aggregate different group feeds. I don't know much about it, though. Would be a nice service for the Python community if someone wants to work on it. - Stephan From noah.gift at gmail.com Tue Oct 9 20:04:00 2007 From: noah.gift at gmail.com (Noah Gift) Date: Tue, 9 Oct 2007 14:04:00 -0400 Subject: [group-organizers] [group-organizers In-Reply-To: <470BC356.7050203@wingware.com> References: <470BC356.7050203@wingware.com> Message-ID: On 10/9/07, Stephan Deibel wrote: > Noah Gift wrote: > >> http://wiki.python.org/moin/LocalUserGroups > >> > >> And please considering posting to: > >> > >> http://python-groups.blogspot.com/ > > > > Anyone have a clever way of getting notes aggregated automatically via > > RSS from an existing blogger account? It seems like either Plone and/or blogger is enough of a starter kit for any group to getting running immediately without locking themselves into the meetup.com system. Getting a way to use these tools together and, aggregating their feeds, is something we will be discussing at the Thursday Atlanta Python User Group meeting. Anyone else that is interested please contact me. We have also been going back and forth on getting a speaker registration system setup, so that Python groups can get speakers from other cities. This really isn't a huge problem to tackle, but it needs some organization, which is why I am starting the discussion. > > - Stephan > From cbc at unc.edu Wed Oct 10 13:03:16 2007 From: cbc at unc.edu (Chris Calloway) Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2007 13:03:16 +0200 Subject: [group-organizers] new Python group In-Reply-To: <470BBC6D.3030109@wingware.com> References: <762858.47309.qm@web44903.mail.sp1.yahoo.com> <470BBC6D.3030109@wingware.com> Message-ID: On Oct 9, 2007, at 7:37 PM, Stephan Deibel wrote: > Nobody seems to be answering these requests, which is a shame > but underscores my first point: Just Do It! Which means a user group FAQ of some sort is needed for at least this most commonly asked question. -- Sincerely, Chris Calloway http://www.seacoos.org office: 332 Chapman Hall cell: (919) 599-3530 mail: Campus Box #3300, UNC-CH, Chapel Hill, NC 27599 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
