Message-ID: Hi All, We are having a pub meetup next week Tuesday 9th September! We have also decided to try a new venue this month which will be Drygate ( https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zTCFuU3dmV_E.khIxoSijPn-Q) it is very close to our usual venue so shouldn't be too much trouble for everyone to get to, we start around 6:30. If you have not made it to a pub meetup before, they are very relaxed and easy going. We welcome all levels of Python experience and its a great place to discuss Python, ask questions and generally enjoy some geeky chat. There will be a printed Python logo on the table so everyone can find us. Cheers, Kevin -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Until now they used Python 2.6 because of their deployment CentOS installations. For the projects I develop as a freelance I use Python 2.7. I'm looking forwards to moving to Python 3.4 but quite a number of Django apps still don't support it yet (but Django does!). Right now I began working on an API for a local radio station (user playlists, podcasts, shows, etc.) of the basque country. Once I identify all the strictly needed dependencies, I'm going to check if they have been ported to 3.4. If those who weren't are "easily" portable maybe I can put in the time and effort to submit a couple of PRs ;-) Right now, it's See you! -- unai From dougal at dougalmatthews.com Wed Sep 10 13:00:10 2014 From: dougal at dougalmatthews.com (Dougal Matthews) Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2014 12:00:10 +0100 Subject: [Python Glasgow] New in Glasgow In-Reply-To: References: <1410199766054.a5dea0aa@Nodemailer> Message-ID: On 10 September 2014 10:44, Marc Cameron wrote: > Hey guys, > > Thanks for a good night in DryGate was nice to meet you all. It was good to meet you all, I really liked Drygate too, so I think that could be our new regular venue for pub meets. I agree with Kevin, it's fair to say most people use Python 2.7 (or at least 2.X). Python 3 is a valid option now and the barriers are decreasing all the time but for the most pain free experience choose 2.7. At work we support 2.6, 2.7 and 3.3 (and 3.4 is being added now). Some projects are 2.X only, none are 3.X only. FWIW, It is much easier these days to get a more modern Python on CentOS and RHEL with software collections. https://www.softwarecollections.org/ From contact at unaizalakain.info Wed Sep 10 13:11:30 2014 From: contact at unaizalakain.info (Unai Zalakain) Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2014 12:11:30 +0100 Subject: [Python Glasgow] New in Glasgow In-Reply-To: References: <1410199766054.a5dea0aa@Nodemailer> <20140910104400.GA3448@def> Message-ID: <20140910111130.GB3448@def> >FWIW, It is much easier these days to get a more modern Python on CentOS and >RHEL with software collections. Yes, but installing some libraries (like PyQt4 IIRC) is a real pain in the ass because they aren't in the software collections and compiling them gives lots of headaches. Twig are graciously hosting us again and will be providing pizza, beer and soft drinks. The office address is: 4th Floor 14 North Claremont Street G3 7LE Glasgow Twig are growing again and are currently on the look out for developers https://gist.github.com/charliequinn/6df89b2ae28c95762e9a Please email cquinn at twig-world.com to find out more. For those of you that don't know, a Dojo is a fun coding event where we split into teams and hack on a problem for about 90 minutes. The focus is on getting something working in that time period. Some teams choose to take a TDD approach while others hack away. Everyone has fun and then we share our results with a show and tell session at the end. The Dojo is designed for *all* levels of Python developer, it's great fun and we make sure we cater for complete beginners through to advanced developers. This is a great way to start learning to write Python. Last time the challenge was to create a valid crossword given a set of words. This turned out to be somewhat tricky and we had an interesting range of results. To find out more about the Dojo, we follow the format of the London Python Dojo[1] and I also created notes for running the Dojo as I forget things: http://dougalmatthews.com/notes/running-a-code-dojo/ The Dojo's are usually really well attended so make sure to get your ticket now at: https://pythonglasgow-dojo-october-2014.eventbrite.co.uk/ See you all there! We will then pull names from a hat for those interested in each book. - Flask Web Development by Miguel Grinberg - a great introduction book to Flask web development and it only requires basic Python knowledge too. - Seven Concurrency Models in Seven Weeks by Paul Butcher - I've not read this yet but I'm looking forward to doing so before I bring it :) I have been given both of these to review and then hand out at the group as we are part of the O'Reilly user group program.
