I fully agree that backward compatibility is important. But I do think
that distutils in its current state is not very useful for slightly
non-trivial projects (specifically those involving C/C++ extensions),
and, while making it useful by filling some holes is not that hard,
it's certainly quite a bit more than just 'cleanup' and 'rearrangement'.
How would you plan to do the work ? Are you interested in people
collaborating ? Will the development / discussion happen on this list ?
