[C++-sig] latest checkin breaks builtin_converters.cpp on GCC cygwin

FWIW: I had the exact same problem with gcc 3.3.1 under Mac OS 10.2.8. I.e. the
workaround should probably be gcc-specific (as opposed to platform-specific).
