[CI-Announce] East Coast Jam folk - Claymont land is protected, Claymont is continuing to rennovate

Hey, all.  The Claymont Society newsletter below bears some landmark events
worth sharing.  The integrity of the grounds, and the institution itself,
are stronger for it.

When I first started visiting Claymont - 25 or 30 years ago, for a Guitar
Craft performance, then a CI workshop, then the first/precursor ECJ - I was
befriended by a number of different walks, in my times ranging between
ebullience and weariness.  Those walks have become some of the most
reliable respites in what are always lively and sometimes challenging
experiences.  I'm deeply pleased that this land is being set aside from
external forces, to continue in their own way.  This is good news for those
of us who have enjoyed our time at and with Claymont, during the East Coast
Jam, and, I think, for everyone who cares about fostering grace.

With the help of the National Park Service's American Battlefield
Protection Program (ABPP), the Claymont Society acted on October 26 to
protect from development 264 acres around the Washington family home, the
Claymont Mansion.

The Society, the Land Trust of the Eastern Panhandle and the Jefferson
County Farmland Protection Board signed a deed placing a conservation
easement on the property. Under the easement, the Society retains ownership
of the land but cannot place any permanent structures on the 264 acres
other than a limited number of small buildings to support agricultural
activities.

Claymont is the second Washington family home in Jefferson County that has
had the land around it protected by a conservation easement funded in part
by the ABPP.  The 219 acres around Harewood, located on the Middleway Pike
northwest of Claymont have been preserved.  Both Claymont and Harewood were
involved in the 1864 Battle of Summit Point, when Confederate forces
attacked Union positions around Claymont at the beginning of General
Sheridan's Shenandoah campaign.

George Washington's brother, John Augustine Washington, had owned the
Claymont property in the 1700s, and George Washington's grand-nephew,
Bushrod Corbin Washington, built the 34-room Claymont Mansion in 1811. It
faces another Washington family home, Blakeley, which was built by John
Augustine Washington III on the other side of Huyett Road.

The Claymont Society owns a total of 343 acres. Exempted from the
conservation easement are a small area immediately around the Claymont
Mansion and a larger area in the southwest corner of the property
containing a barn/dormitory building and houses built in the 20th century.
Nothing will be built to obstruct the view of the Claymont Mansion from
Huyett Road.

*Save America's Treasures Grant Restoration Project Reaches Completion*

 In 2010, The Claymont Mansion was awarded the prestigious Save America's
Treasure Grant through the National Park Service.   Since then, it has been
our task to raise $150,000 with the grant meeting every dollar earned. Yes,
that amounts to $300,00o of restoration work for this historic Washington
home.

 Throughout this time, work on the Mansion has been in full swing.  The
improvements have been immeasurable.  We expect the final phase to be
complete before year end.

Claymont is so honored and grateful to be able to give the Mansion this
well deserved attention.  We wish to thank the National Park Service, The
Jefferson County Commission and  all of our friends who have supported us
with their donations.  So many of you have been so generous along the way.

   *The History Channel's *
*"Men Who Built America"*

Last November the History Channel filmed this TV Miniseries on location in
the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.  Many scenes were filmed in the
Mansion or on the grounds.  It has been fun trying to spot the scenes shot
at Claymont (as most of the Mansion was transformed and barely
recognizable).  A few Claymont friends made it on screen as extras.  The
series finale airs this Sunday, November 11th at 8:00pm or you can catch it
on reruns.

When the internet can incite political revolution or dancing in the
streets, we can be in awe of modern communication.  Yet how well are we
communicating with our inner-selves?

 Join us in the beautiful setting of the Claymont Mansion as we celebrate
the New Year in a silent meditation retreat.

The techniques we explore are from Theravadin Buddhism, developing focus
and insight.  Meditation in action, such as walking or physical work shows
how we can transform our daily life to a deeper and clearer communication
within.  The retreat will be led by Chrissie Mann, who practiced at the
Asoka Mission, a Buddist Monastery in India for twelve years.  Chrissie was
brought to Claymont by Bhante, the late Venerable Vira Dharmawara Mahathera
who taught at the Claymont Society for Continuous Education.

We will include a daily movements class led by Amy Silver as well as
commentaries
from a Fourth Way perspective by Kip Page, a founding member of Claymont
and Fourth Way group leader in Alaska.
