From xs4jan at gmx.de Tue Jan 11 14:21:43 2011 From: xs4jan at gmx.de (J.B.) Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2011 14:21:43 +0100 Subject: [CI-Announce] SABINE SONNENSCHEIN & FELIX RUCKERT: Contact Improvisation based on Tantra / CI als Tantrische Praxis, WORKSHOP March 7-11, 2011, Schwelle7, Berlin/Germany Message-ID: -------------ENGLISH Version ---------------- (Deutscher Text unten) Sabine Sonnenschein & Felix Ruckert Contact Improvisation based on Tantra Retreat: Monday to Friday, March 7-11, 2011 all day, 10am -10pm (10am to 1pm / 3pm - 6pm / 8Pm -10 pm) Sabine and Felix will direct this retreat together. Sabine will focus on the Tantric aspects and Felix will provide the Tools for Contact improvisation. Contact improvisation (ci) was developed in the US in the 1970s. As a dance practice and social event CI has a deeply sensual aspect where bodies find each other and come together. In classical ci classes, this aspect is basically ignored. The idea of setting aside sensuality and with it the erotic element, created a space for CI to develop, which is important, but nevertheless based on fiction. In this retreat, through tantric approach und techniques, CI becomes a tantric practice and sensual dance experience in which space for love energy is provided within a defined form. Love energy includes sexual energies. That means: We?ll learn techniques that enable us to sense love energy, sexual energy in the body, to direct it consciously and to open an exchange with a partner in a subtle and delicate way. Dances find their form nourished by love energy. We?ll experience how these dances take shape among women, among men, and in a mixed group. A deep tantric experience requires adequate time, space, and intensity, which is why the workshop will be held as a retreat. Kashmir tantrism says that everything is vibration. This retreat allows dance to become a uniting with the world, a spiritual practice. Dance is an expansion into the space, tantra is expansion; and of course more than just etymologically: tan (Sanskrit) = to expand, tra (Sanskrit) = to free . Dance meditation opens our bodies, we dance as if though in water, internally fulfilled by the sensation of streaming in your organs. Here, it is possible to experience an internal and external tenderness. Intense emotions take place physically but dissolve again in time, if the body is open. Dancing we make love with the space or with a partner or several partners as well as the space. We sense the space between you and me, we experience ourselves sustained by the space. You permit the awareness to experience you, the space, and us. CI, as a tantric practice, means experiencing an "us," which arises from a lack of intention, from improvization, and from the moment. Based on breathing and physical exercises as well as a ritual of touch we sense ourselves as well as each other and dance together. We fine- tune our perception; we refine all of our senses in order to enter into play with one another. Belly breathing and its observation will be the initial issue for all meditations, dances, and movements. I find a very deep connection to my dance partner by concentrating on his or her breathing, which leads us into a shared dance experience with and in one another. Is the impulse initiating a movement a common one? There are impulses that lead us deeper into each other and open spaces inwardly, and that that allow us to move outwardly, expanding into the space. We use our love energy in specific ways, and also classical CI techniques to arrive at a spiritual dance practice. The sensual fusion of bodies and sensual dances are sheltered and sustained by the group. This retreat provides a safe space for personal as well as group experiences. Most work will take place in mixed groups, but there will also be women-only and men-only times. Personal limits will be respected. All of the dances can be stopped at any time, if it does not feel right. Nakedness in dancing may be explored, here, too, personal borders will be respected. For everbody, who loves to dance and wants to refine his /her love energy und perception. For participation some experience in a wholesome as well as physical training is needed, like for example Tantra, CI, dance, dance improvisation, Yoga, Tai Chi, martial arts etc. None of the heteronormativity of classical Tantra! More: http://www.schwelle7.de/GAESTE.html ------------------------------------------deutscher Text------------------------------------------------- Sabine Sonnenschein & Felix Ruckert Contact Improvisation als Tantrische Praxis ? The workshop explores a series of durational images focusing on physical, emotional, and energetic exchanges between bodies. Each encounter is present as a testimony to a shared moment, a living inheritance, and a temporary memorial to the cellular body, and its (in)glorious contamination at the brink of collapse. My body tries to cry... continues hancock & kelly?s workshop trajectory through both self and other, revisiting and expanding ideas of material as inheritance, exchange, and testimony. The five-day workshop culminates in a live durational performance configured around the workshop participants. The performance consists of an evolving series of bodily exchanges between performers, each of which, at breaking point, become memorialized in gold. Richard Hancock and Traci Kelly's workshop-laboratories offer a space for practice- based/body-based thinking, built around a set of questions pertinent to the duo's current investigations. This 'thinking' is made public by means of a pre-determined choreographic structure that is further developed throughout the workshop and presented at the end. In addition to the specific questions of the workshop, sessions include a series of physically and emotionally demanding exercises (drawn from the artists' own practices, other seminal performance practitioners, and wider areas of body-based research) that situate the body and these questions in the context of Hancock and Kelly's wider socio-artistic concerns. Participants from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to consider themselves as both 'makers' and 'performers', working within a framework designed to support and provide the space to question, risk, and expose. Participants should be aware that the some of the workshop processes and the performance require nudity. Timetable The workshop will run from Monday, March 7th to Friday March 11th, 2011, with a public presentation on the final day. Mon March 14 13:00 - 18:00 Tue March 15 13:00 - 18:00 Wed March 16 13:00 - 18:00 Thur March 117 13:00 - 18:00 Fri March 18 16:00 - 23:00 (including public presentation, time to be confirmed) Please note that the structure of the workshop and final presentation are shaped around the participants, and it is important that participants are able to commit to attend all sessions. Biographies hancock & kelly live is the collaborative project of artists Richard Hancock (b. 1977, UK) and Traci Kelly (b. 1961, UK). Since 2001, they have collaborated on a body of work, questioning and provoking the gaps between subjects, between lives, between one another, between 'you' and 'I'. Through an Internationally acclaimed body of work spanning performance, dance, video, photography, installation, and text, they have continually asked questions of where the limits of the body may be drawn, and separated from the knowledge and questions with which they are enmeshed. Further, their provocations ask where and how we can begin to define what is 'you' and where am 'I'. The resulting works have been a series of intimate and queer events, both moving and spectacular. hancock & kelly live has performed and exhibited at venues and events including the National Review of Live Art, UK (2005, 2007, 2009), Performance Space, Australia (2007), Interregnum, Denmark (2008), the Museu de ?vora, Portugal (2009), and K?nstlerhaus Mousonturm, Germany (2010). Richard Hancock is an artist/choreographer currently based in Berlin. His research interests include questions of racial 'whiteness', masculinity, and non-reproductive sexualities. Richard Hancock holds a first-class honours degree in Fine Art from the Nottingham Trent University, and a Masters degree with distinction in Critical Theory: The Body & Representation from the University of Reading. He is currently Associate at New Work Network, London, where he is developing models for artist-led learning programmes. His ongoing collaboration, RESIDENT ALIENS (with the artist Liz Rosenfeld), is an exploration of queer family, lineage, and portraiture. Traci Kelly?s practice slips and knots between performance, visual and textual languages. Her poetic and visual imagery opens up a space for doubt and questions the status of the body. Frequently her work implicates the audience in gestures of intimacy and solicited expressions of sincerity. Together with Richard Hancock, Kelly approaches collaboration as a plastic material that may take multiple forms. Currently she is exploring collaboration as a solo and viral process, resulting in encounters that are queer and inviting.
