Based on several talks Amy has had with Brooke recently, we realize that our low-key business practices do not provide Joe's with sufficient income to justify our "claim" to Sunday afternoons. We have come up with a new system which will serve everyone. We will pay Joe's by check once a month ($120 for 4 Sundays; $150 if there are 5 Sundays in a month). Amy has generously offered to do this for the time being. Having the jam"banker" alternate every so often will spread the responsibility. As for individual contributions, there will be two options: 1) Jam regulars can pay a monthly rate to the jam banker (this offsets Amy being out $120 at one shot) Some of us did this yesterday- it's easy! 2) Drop-ins or occasional jammers can still pay per jam, and after 20 years, we recognize the need to raise the fee to $5. Rather than leave cash in the studio for Brooke to find (or not find), Amy or some other designated person will collect the money each week to feed the kitty. (Hey Ken- whatever happened to the useful and decorative cash box?) Maintaining an ongoing jam has been a labor of love for many of us. For Brooke, maintaining Joe's does involve love and dedication, but it is above all a business with significant bills to pay. I hope this announcement does not confound anyone. It may seem like an abrupt change, but it has really been needed for quite some time. The most important thing is that we want to keep dancing! All the best, Robin From phffft@hotmail.com Mon Nov 20 04:40:18 2000 From: phffft@hotmail.com (Cyrus Khambatta) Date: Mon, 20 Nov 2000 04:40:18 GMT Subject: [CI-Announce] (no subject) Message-ID: D.C. 6th International Improvisation Festival sponsored by GWU Nov. 30 - Dec. 10 Improvisation Festival features artists from around the world meeting artists from around D.C. Workshop Descriptions: Biography: Francesca Genco will lead you into a more intimate relationship with your body and spirit. Re-member and explore your deepest and purest self through fluid, connected breathing. Express what you find through authentic movement and voice. We will often work with eyes closed as a way to facilitate dropping deeper inward, using breath as a vehicle to access moving and sounding from a core inner impulse. Drawing and journaling will then serve as ways to further express our findings. No movement/dance experience is necessary. Daniel Burkholder will teach a workshop combining indivual awareness with group mind, exploring dancing in a crowd. Finding our place in the group through structures based in space, contact/non-contact & moving/stillness. Caroline Waters will teach a class looking at the use of sensation as a resource for moving. Concentrating on practices drawn from contact improvisation and Chi-gong we will be looking at the use of touch in partner dancing whilst improvising. Having the possibility to examine different states and developing skills of real time composition whilst the body/mind is in motion. Sharon Mansur's workshop utilizes the movement framework developed by Rudolph Laban to identify and clarify personal movement preferences and improvisational choices. Learn how to observe, self-assess and broaden your range, encouraging a deeper and richer performance experience. Cyrus Khambatta's workshop will focus on creating and changing environments beginning from a deeply personal and internal state using vocalization and working outwards, bringing this into connection first with others, then with the space. Once an environment is created we will allow it to inspire us to move into the space and explore its boundaries, seeking ways to transition to new environmental states while maintaining the inside-outside connection. Renata Arnedo's workshop will accent our capacity to be in and with the present seeking to find a deeper sense of easiness, sensitivity and freedom of movement and body. At the same time, we will examine our individual intuition and imagaination as well as musicality, sense of rhythm and phrasing needed for improvisation. For more specific information regarding workshops please call (202) 994-0739 or email PHFFFT@hotmail.com. The festival is sponsored The George Washington University Departments of Theater and Dance and the Department of Music. International artist participation is made possible by support from The French Embassy, The Phffft! Company of New York and The Dance Construction Company of Washington D.C. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
