To answer your question, the gmail web interface counts threads while
IMAP counts mails.  gmail doesn't seem to support the THREAD imap
extension that imaplib does support.

I'm running into the same problem now, and I'd like to be able to count
threads in a folder instead of just mails.

Did you end up finding a solution to this problem ?
