I particularly enjoyed Catherine's talk on "The IPython Notebook Revolution" and I'm inclined to agree with her. I would add that there is also a significant financial factor involved, comparing a tool like IPython Notebook to Matlab. I would argue that the extensibility of IPython Notebook puts it above Matlab in this regard, and that is a noteworthy thing. This does seem to be vertically oriented technology, versus horizontal. Vertical technology causes change in paradigms. Best, James -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We moved it because the workshop is not happening until September, and now that we have moved it, we have a schedule hole for the August COhPy. Would someone please volunteer to do a presentation for August? Cheers, --Brian P.S. If you gave a talk at PyOhio, most of the COhPy regulars were busy running the conference. In one short weekend (a Friday evening and a Saturday), participants get a real handle on programming for practical tasks, using the easy yet powerful Python language... while having a fun time with new friends! The primary target audience is women of all ages and backgrounds. Men can participate as the guest of a female attendee - that's where the "women and their friends" part comes in. If you're a man who wants to take part, ask a woman you know to join you. Don't underestimate the power of a personal invitation - you'll never know which of your friends just needs a nudge to try it until you give her that nudge. The workshop is the latest in a series based on the famous Boston Python Workshop; they've already introduced hundreds of beginners to programming in Boston, Indianapolis, Dayton, Portland, Chicago, and Kansas City. It's designed for true beginners to programming - absolutely no programming or computer experience is assumed. (Even experienced programmers have enjoyed the workshop, though - so long as they're new to Python!) We'll enjoy food, thanks to our generous sponsor LeadingEdje, and a great venue in The Forge, Pillar's brand-new workspace in the Short North! Space is limited, so please sign up at http://tinyurl.com/cmh-py-workshop LeadingEdje: leadingedje.com Pillar: pillartechnology.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The Fest runs Sep 13-15, but our table is just on Saturday, Sep 14. Time to make plans for the PyOhio table. Here's what we need, in rough order of importance. 1. Volunteers The best thing about Python is its people, so let's show them the people! Can you commit to hanging around the table for one or more hours? It's fun chatting with people who stop by, it helps publicize PyOhio and Python, and you'll probably learn some stuff. It's the very best of the OLF Hallway Track. If you can, fill in times you can crew the table here: http://doodle.com/x6rpp48gragmzv4g You may want to refer to the Saturday OLF schedule: http://ohiolinux.org/saturday 2. Usergroup info Get some flyers or other swag for your Python user group to us, and we will gladly pass it out! Drop it at the table in person, or mail it to me at 12044 Wolf Creek Pike, Brookville, OH 45309 Also, is your group on this list? If not, let me know... COHPy OSU Open Source Club ClePy CincyPy IndyPy MichiPUG GRPUG PGHPy Dayton Dynamic Languages ChiPy 3. Stuff needed: Definite needs: Banner Signup sheet for PyOhio mailing list 1 or 2 machines, ideally with largish monitors (I can bring one) (What to show: Talk videos? The website? A Python tutorial?) Big sign with Swag: Leftover PyOhio programs PyOhio stickers (I have) Swag from regional usergroups PyOhio business cards (I have) "What is Python"-type flyers (anybody know a good one?) For programmers, a good keyboard is like a good pair of running shoes for a runner. There are a *lot* of bad keyboards out there, but there are also a lot of good ones. It's funny that people balk at spending $100 for a keyboard but buy a $100 pair of shoes... anyway, yes, I'm a bit of a keyboard snob after having carpal tunnel symptoms and alleviating them by getting a Leopold mechanical keyboard. Jeff "Coding Horror" Atwood is also a member of the keyboard cult[1] and just announced[2] a new keyboard in partnership with WASD yesterday, called the CODE keyboard[3]. There are a few cool features of the keyboard that I hadn't seen often on good mechanical keyboards: 1. It's lighted... yes, that's bling, but cool :-) 2. Multi-media keys (I currently map Ctrl-F# keys to play/pause/volume, for example) 3. Dip switch configurability for different layouts (Dvorak, etc.) and things like making Caps Lock the Ctrl key. 4. Windows logo key is blank :-). 4. Comes with a keycap puller (a nice touch). Of course it has all the standards: Cherry MX (Clear) switches, steel backplate, detachable USB, PS/2 adapter, 6-key (or N-key with PS/2) rollover, available in tenkeyless or 104 key versions. I know this sounds a bit "advertisey" but I really think a good keyboard is a must for any professional programmer. -Eric [1] http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2010/10/the-keyboard-cult.html [2] http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2013/08/the-code-keyboard.html [3] http://codekeyboards.com/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
