Hi Elena,

We at PyCon AU have a couple of important announcements next week to
make -- our CFP closes on Friday 4 May, and, most importantly, our
registrations are opening tomorrow.

So I'm going to be at the Sydney PUG next week to talk to people there
about the conference.  I was wondering if I could offer the same to
Canberra PUG -- I can't attend in person, but if I can find an
internet connection whilst I'm in Sydney, I'd be happy to attend via
Skype to answer questions from Canberra PUG people, as well as share
some of our plans.

Any chance we can make this happen?

Here at Monash University (Melbourne) we have a first year Data
Structures and Algorithms course that is taught using Java, and I am
one of the people working in the transition to use Python as the
teaching language.

Are any undergraduate courses there in Canberra ran using Python as
the teaching language? Any experience you can share will be useful,
but I am particularly interested in first year foundation courses
where Python is more a teaching language (here's how you learn about
algorithms using Python) than an implementation language (here is how
you massage data or build a website using Python).

The next Canberra Python meetup will be this Wednesday (30 May) at ANU.

Come at 6pm. We'll then have time to get to know each other (especially
newcomers) before the talks get underway at 6:30.

We'll announce the talks shortly. Meanwhile, there are still some slots
open, so, if there's something interesting you'd like share about Python,

Hey everyone,

Just another reminder in follow up to Ed's email yesterday: Don't forget
there's the Python UG this week.

It's going to be great with quite a few new people and talk about Python
with some very serious networks from Uber.

There's also been quite a bit of interest in PANDAS if anyone is interested
in giving a quick demo of a use case that would be really interesting.

There is also going to be definite continuation at the Wig and Pen this
week, I for one will be going come hell or high-water (it's that lull
between assessment and exams :)

Also, don't forget to register for PyCon AU before early bird closes.

PyCon Australia and Google Australia are pleased to announce that
they're joining forces to offer gender diversity delegate grants to
women who wish to attend PyCon Australia in 2012. These grants will
cover up to $AUD500 of travel, accommodation and registration costs
for women living outside of the Southern Tasmania region to attend
this year's conference.

These grants aim to reduce the financial barriers to attending PyCon
Australia 2012, by subsidising the registration and travel costs of
people from diverse groups, who contribute in important ways to the
Python community.

In order to be eligible for one of the grants, you must be:

- A woman, aged 18 or older

Sorry I'm still failing to make it to the Wednesday PUG.  Hope you guys are
all having a great time.

I'm heading off to the Python Conference in Hobart this year to do a
presentation on techniques for improving Python performance.  I'll try to
put it together before then and try it out at the PUG.
