Yes, you can change compression mode per invocation of "borg create".
Compression is maintained per chunk of data, not per repo or archive.

That depends on the actual data you have of course, compared to lz4
(re-)compresing with zstd might save you additional storage.

After changing from lz4 to zstd, things are slower than expected for
backing up many individual, but mostly small files compared to very
few but large ones. I reverted some of the affected backups and am 
pretty interested to see backup times tomorrow. Though, I don't
understand what I see right now and therefore asked for some advice.
