I wonder why, because this only occurs with archives that were created 
when borg was terminated by kill command. Those that ended normally 
(rc=0 instead of rc=143) don't show this. Additionally, the file is 
readable without problems:

> sfo2205:~ # cat /mnt/rs1219a/SRV/config.old
> [repository]
> version = 1
> segments_per_dir = 1000
> max_segment_size = 524288000
> append_only = 0
> storage_quota = 0
> additional_free_space = 0
> id = b784edb64520690cceba896f6809da733766ee870b11d55145e8383e072927b8

as well as the other one, without '.old':

> sfo2205:~ # cat /mnt/rs1219a/SRV/config
> [repository]
> version = 1
> segments_per_dir = 1000
