So, please update your calendars for this month: http://baypiggies.net/ Thursday, July 21, 2016 Meeting *Note*: The meeting for July is a week earlier than normal (third Thursday instead of fourth). This is to avoid traffic congestion caused by a concert scheduled for Shoreline Amphitheater on the 28th. Thanks to Peter and LinkedIn for agreeing to the change. Please RSVP here so we can track for food and chairs: http://www.meetup.com/BAyPIGgies/events/228209028/ Topic: Hacking Math Class with PythonSpeaker: Peter FarrellAbstract: Math instruction is stuck in the 19th Century and it's in dire need of modernization. Computer programming in Python has the potential to make math class more relevant, meaningful and engaging. Programming can not only achieve the goals we've always had for math students - to be able to think computationally and build algebraic and geometric tools to solve problems - but it can be used to explore math topics beyond the reach of traditional methods. Using Python, students can create fractals, cellular automata and 3D models to help them learn math or science topics. And it looks cool! Anybody interested in education, math or Python should attend! You will learn best practices and how to think like a Pythonista. The course will include lectures, hands on activities and lively discussions. We will provide iPython notebook with notes, code and numerous examples. After the course, you will be on your way to use Python productively. The event will be held at Innowest, 764 San Aleso Ave, Sunnyvale. It will run from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm on 7/16/2016 and 9:30 am to 5:30 pm on 7/17/2016. Lunch will be provided for both days. On day one - we will discuss file IO, data structure, functions, modules and try-except. On day two - we will discuss classes, regular expression, generators, decorators and collections. Did you know Google has various open source libraries that help you do exactly that? Users who may have tried & failed, run into roadblocks, been confused about using our APIs, or had issues with authentication are welcome to come and make these non-issues moving forward. Finally, we'll demo using multiple Google APIs to give you an idea of what it's all about! FULL DESCRIPTION This talk covers everything you need to know in order to use Google APIs from Python. We'll start with the Google APIs Client Library, which you can use with *any* of the languages supported, not just Python. We'll discuss how to install the Client Library for Python, then describe & show the steps necessary to create new projects & enable Google APIs from the Developers Console. Next we discuss how to create & access the necessary credentials. That's just the setup. The second part of the talk walks you through the necessary boilerplate code that you need to get started. This code will stay fairly consistent for your first, second, or 20th app, and whether you using 1, 2, or 20 Google APIs. We'll conclude demonstrating some of these steps, and time-permitting, walk through some some simple code (in Python) that accesses Google APIs. Some APIs only require simple API key access while others require full authorization, so we'll do our best to show examples of how to do both. To that end, we are thrilled to announce the availability of 5 diversity scholarships sponsored by Clover Health. If you have been looking for that financial aid to attend the Python Regional Conference in SF on August 19-21, please fill out the application form by Wednesday, July 27, at 10 p.m.. Candidates will be selected from the application pool by the PyBay organizing committee. Selected candidates will be notified by the end of day Friday, July 29. Clover is a new health insurance company building a team dedicated to using technology in measurable ways to change healthcare for the better. Python is an integral part of their tech stack. It powers the data pipelines we use to process and analyze our member data, and it integrates well with our data science tools. Python web frameworks are also the foundation of the internal and external apps they build to support our insurance operations. For example, Django?s CMS is instrumental in allowing their marketing team to edit website content on the fly. Since they rely on Python so heavily, one of their primary goals is to support the Python community by sending people to conferences, sponsoring SF Python and other local events, and organizing PyLadies events in their office. For PyBay 2016, Clover is offering 5 scholarship opportunities to those who may otherwise be unable to attend the conference. Want to sponsor a scholarship and be featured on PyBay?s financial aid page ? A lot of students, recent grads, and people in between jobs are looking for ways to attend PyBay. Your contribution will make all the difference! Please contact grace at pybay.com for more information. Please spread the word and help me thank Clover for stepping forward with this sponsorship! Check out www.pybay.com if you haven't already. If you'd like to see an annual Python conference in San Francisco please buy a ticket and support us this year! We have an awesome lineup of speakers and if the first conference is a success we feel confident we can more easily locate corporate sponsors and affordable spaces for successive years. You could also help by spreading the word - I'm buying an extra ticket myself and donating it to whoever helps out the most on Twitter - see https://twitter.com/simeonfranklin/status/759039784119521281 for the details and please retweet. I hope to see you there! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I live nearby, so if someone needs a place to crash and doesn't mind a dog (a super friendly lab) in the house I can offer a bed. ________________________________ From: Baypiggies on behalf of Simeon Franklin Sent: Friday, July 29, 2016 9:21:26 AM To: Baypiggies Subject: Re: [Baypiggies] PyBay (and a free ticket) Hey All - I hope you aren't getting tired of hearing about PyBay - the upcoming mini-PyCon in San Francisco Aug 19 & 20th.
