To start coordinating the event, I'd first like to measure interest. Please visit the following Google Form to provide your feedback. http://bit.ly/southbaypythonhack If you don't see your topic in the list, you can either fill out the form with your response or email me directly at web at stevepiercy.com and I'll add it. If there is sufficient interest for the event, then I'll work on scheduling it. I would be sensitive to other meetings of PyLadiesSF South Bay, BayPiggies, and SFPython, and avoid scheduling conflicts as much as practical. We currently have a space generously hosted and sponsored by LinkedIn, although I would entertain offers from other sponsors to host elsewhere. FYI, I attended the SF Python Hack Night on Monday night, and it was an amazing 3-hour event with 141 attendees. Skill levels ranged from total newbie to seasoned developer. Interests included installation, testing, automation, Django, Numpy/Scipy, pandas, and a few others I probably missed. Some folks huddled around tables, others broke out into conference rooms with white boards. Food and beverage was provided by the sponsoring host, AdRoll HQ, to fuel us. http://www.meetup.com/sfpython/events/124496852/ PyLadiesSF South Bay has also been holding meetups. http://www.meetup.com/PyLadiesSF/ Also see the Silicon Valley Python Meetup. http://www.meetup.com/silicon-valley-python/ --steve -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Steve Piercy Web Site Builder Soquel, CA From glen at glenjarvis.com Mon Jul 1 01:07:00 2013 From: glen at glenjarvis.com (Glen Jarvis) Date: Sun, 30 Jun 2013 16:07:00 -0700 Subject: [Baypiggies] Baypiggies topic suggestions In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Tony, I have my own projector. It's that time of year again! The PyCon website received a beautiful refresh and we're ready to accept proposals for the 2014 conference taking place April 9-17 in Montreal. Check out the new site at http://us.pycon.org/2014 and create your account today! Registration will open in September, so mark your calendars and get ready to head into Canada for another great PyCon. We've received record numbers of proposals over each of the last several years, and we expect this year to be no different. For 2012 we received over 500 proposals for talks, tutorials, and posters, and for 2013 we received over 600. This community's excellent submissions have made for schedules where there is just too much good stuff to take in without cloning yourself, which is a problem we're proud to have. Thankfully you can catch up with the talks you missed at http://pyvideo.org/. If you're interested in submitting a proposal, take a look at our Call for Proposals at http://us.pycon.org/2014/speaking/cfp/ and poke around the site for advice and resources to help you create a great proposal. New for this year are the addition of Lightning Talk proposals, from which we'll be pre-selecting some of the slots that make up the Lightning Talk sessions. If your company is interested in sponsorship, we need you. Sponsors are what make PyCon a possibility, and sponsorship offers some great values to the generous organizations who support the conference. Check out https://us.pycon.org/2014/sponsors/whysponsor/ to find out what you get out of sponsorship, with a prospectus at https://us.pycon.org/2014/sponsors/prospectus/. Since the details of the Python Hack nights are still being worked on, I wanted to ensure we have a presentation for July, and to allow extra time to put together a fun session for the Python Hack night. We can easily schedule the Python Hack nights in addition to our regular meetings in the future. Vote +1 if you are interested in attending the *Python for Clinical Genomics * presentation in July *Python for Clinical Genomics * Generally computational biology workflows harken back to ancient days when Perl programmers roamed the Earth. Lately though, genomics analysis has been moving to Python -- in particular the excellent Pysam library has brought the state of the art DNA sequence manipulation tools to the world of Python. In this talk I'll demonstrate the basic tools that I use as part of my daily work in a Clinical Next-Generation Sequencing company. We use Pysam and Pygr to work with the DNA directly, Django to manage our wet lab and organize our genetics knowledge, and Numpy and Scipy for developing novel assays and for general numerical analysis. We'll work through a live demonstration that takes clinical genetics data all the way from the DNA sequencer's output to the final result that we share with the patient. Along the way I'll introduce the basic concepts of genomics for a computer science audience. If you're a computer scientist or engineer and you've ever been curious about making the jump to genomics, the time has never been better. Genomics right now is like computers were in 1973 -- a huge wave about to break. *About Jared Maguire * Jared spent the last five years at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT laying much of the analytical groundwork for the new wave of DNA sequencing technologies. During that time he was a senior analyst on key projects such as the 1000 Genomes project, which gave him the chance to be one of the first people on earth to map out the patterns of genetic variation in thousands of whole human genomes. Now he's moved to Counsyl where he's working to help bring the new wave of genomics technologies from the research lab into the clinic. *About Counsyl* Counsyl is a medical genomics startup whose goal is to make the human genome practically useful for life-altering decisions. Over the last few years, we?ve grown from a Stanford dorm room to become one of the largest clinical genome centers in the world. Our pre-pregnancy genetic test is now prescribed by physicians for more than 2.5% of all births in the United States. (no meeting tonight) I saw this in my calendar tonight and thought it was BayPIGgies without looking closer.. oops sorry.. "How I Learned to Stop Worrying about Big Data and Love the Data That Actually Counts - Counsyl Tech Talk" http://genomicsbigdata.eventbrite.com The cost of sequencing human genomes is plunging - 5x faster than the cost of computing. The potential impact on preventive healthcare and the medical landscape is boundless. The science is there but the scale isn't. That's where Counsyl comes in. We are building the technology platform to make genomics useful and accessible to everyone. We hope you will join us on Thursday, July 18, from 7:00-9:00pm for our Tech Talk on How I Learned to Stop Worrying about Big Data and Love the Data That Actually Counts. We look forward to hosting you at our newly renovated 60,000 square foot space in South San Francisco - oh and of course there will be food, drinks, and networking! We hope to see you there! RSVP here: http://genomicsbigdata.eventbrite.com Date: 7/18/13 at 7pm Location: Counsyl HQ, 180 Kimball Way, South San Francisco, CA Talk Abstract: "How I Learned to Stop Worrying about Big Data and Love the Data That Actually Counts." Imran Haque, Director of Research, Counsyl A single current DNA sequencer can produce 540GB of raw data in a few hours -- without even covering an entire human genome. So, obviously, genomics must be a big data science. In this talk I will deflate two pernicious myths: that "Big Data" is where all the action is, and that genomics is Big Data. I will explain why genomics, as practiced both in the clinic and in research, is distinct from other areas usually used to define "big data". In particular, a dearth of outcomes data means that interpretable regions of the genome are tiny, while the rest is all sequenced up with nowhere to go. I will further argue that despite this, genomics is one of the most interesting current areas of computer science and engineering, and is likely to be the latest wellspring for new innovations across the stack from architecture to AI.
