Seconded. The API is really easy. Once your needs get more complex though, like 
needing alpha blending or font anti-aliasing, you are going to be going out of scope 
WRT PIL's design.

Also, I still can't figure out how to compile PIL on Mac, which disables a small 
feature of one of my applications when I deploy to that platform.
