libraries, is the main difficulties I believe. As it has been mentioned 
on this thread, having concurrent ideas sprouting is not necessariily 
evil. What we truly need is a common platform for code development, and 
at the same time having a team (and a BDFL) ramping up in evaluating the 
core libs and making decision for the longer term. A single place for 
development/distribution would help people realize that other tools are 
already available, and the core team evaluate what is available out there.

I would +1 the starting assumption that numpy+pyfits is uncontroversial. 
Then 2D plotting should probably be matplotlib based, but there are 2 
efforts there : APLpy and Jae-Joon wcsgrid2, which are complementary in 
terms of focus, but potentially concurrent in the longer terms (wcsgrid2 
is a direct use of matplotlib C++ libs to plot astronomical image, while 
APLpy adds an independent C++ layer to matplotlib [correct me if I am 
wrong]).

We should be careful with 3D plotting : first because matplotlib has a 
basic 3D rendering, but mayavi does much better while carrying a heavier 
set of dependencies (vtk, traits? again correct me if I am wrong), and 
second because with 3D we entering the realm of high level dedicated 
scientific needs (think structure formation and n-body simulations for 
cosmologists, single photon space/energy or space/time investigations 
for g-ray astrophysicists, etc....); so we should probably go slowly 
with 3D, and it is not an urgent matter, IMHO.

As far as WCS is concerned, I believe there is Calabretta's wcslib and 
WCSTools out there. Then Kapteyn and pyWCS link to WCSLIB, while 
WCSTools has its own python wrapping IIRC. So some decisions will be 
needed here. I would contend that this is one of the urgent matters to 
settle. Note that wcsgrid2 can be built against either pywcs and 
Kapteyn, so we may not have to choose against either one.

I hope that I am not the only one here :), but I would like to emphasize 
that a gamma-ray physicist, who may be using fairly different high-level 
tools for analysis of data from Fermi LAT for instance, is *very* 
interested in this thread :) Let's keep in mind :
- CCD based image reduction
- single photon astrophysics
- cosmology (I believe we are going to have to look into healpix  as a 
core lib for instance)
- exoplanets
- amateur astronomy
- many other specialized area of astronomy/astrophysics....

yes, this seems like the natural path to try to follow : create a 
toolkit astropy, with core libs and standard core integrated after 
review, and a Scikits-like central for independent code hacking. It 
would be worth to cross-check with scipy-dev what kind of issues were 
raised with scikits use..... I seem to remember threads about related 
problems.
