Why use Python in astronomy?

Many astronomers use scripting and scripting-type languages in astronomical
data analysis.  Some are very expensive.  Others lack portability between
different operating system and processor architectures.  Still others lack
powerful methods for manipulating numerical data.  Python is free, runs on
a multitude of system architectures, and can handle numerical processing.
What Python currently lacks is a large library of fundamental routines
needed by the astronomical community.

That is the goal of this mailing list.

We want to establish a nexus for development and distribution of
Python-based  routines and other software to address the needs of the
astronomical community.  You can find out more about what's been done and
what is planned at our website (which is still under construction)
