Job Description

The Fourth Estate is looking for an experienced full-stack Python developer to help build, extend, improve and maintain our Superdesk infrastructure.

Wait!!! What is Superdesk?

Superdesk is an open-source news creation, production, curation, distribution and publishing platform. You can read more about it here, or dig into the code repository and stack at:

You will play a key role, designing and implementing and managing various Superdesk components and features. As part of small and growing you will have the opportunity to work on our own projects as well as contributing code to back to the open-source project. You will be instrumental in building systems and software in support of our global public-benefit journalism mission.

We are not looking for a software development “team”. We are looking for one (or two) very awesome people to grow with us and help build the next-generation global news organization.


We’re a global and distributed organization with most employees and freelancers working remotely around the world. This is a remote or telecommute position and applicants anywhere in the world are encouraged.

This project will have part time requirements and will start as a contract, however has full-time and long-term potential exists for the right person.


Design, develop, and maintain our Superdesk codebase, applications and scalable cloud-based technologies. Solve problems and squash bugs as they arise as we scale and grow our member base. Work to integrate new and existing services and products.

  • You should have experience writing and shipping code with a modern web application framework.
  • Experience with an RDBMS, Postgres, Mongo and Elasticsearch preferred.
  • Command of modern web browsers.
  • Experience with version control fundamentals.
  • Understanding of server administration.
  • Comfortable on a command line in a Linux environment, Ubuntu preferred.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Must be able to effectively telecommute.
  • A can-do entrepreneurial spirit and healthy sense of humor.
  • You should work and play well with others, and be solutions oriented.
