Job Title

Machine Learning Engineer

Job Description

Machine Learning Engineer - 91044 Organization: CR-Computational Research

Berkeley Lab’s Computational Research Division has an opening for a Machine Learning Engineer. As part of a fast-moving and vibrant research team, this position will contribute to the design and development of advanced hybrid Machine Learning (ML) algorithms that combine Probabilistic Graphical Models and Deep Learning models for scientific data generated by experiments and simulation. Working under supervision of senior staff, the successful candidate will develop new software implementations of machine learning methods and assist in conducting studies to measure their performance as applied to scientific data analysis problems.

What You Will Do:

  • Contribute to the design and development of advanced hybrid Machine Learning (ML) algorithms that combine Probabilistic Graphical Models and Deep Learning models for scientific data.
  • Develop software ML in both Python and C/C++, including specific Python ML packages like PyTorch, Keras, Tensorflow, Caffe.
  • Develop an understanding of software pipelines behind several different well known deep learning models for image analysis such as U-Net, VGG, V-net, ResNet, Graph Neural Networks, and others, aiming to adapt/extend such models for the purposes of the scientific research.
  • Contribute to performance and scalability analysis of these ML methods, including identification of performance bottlenecks and limits.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of parallelization of these hybrid ML methods for both distributed- and shared-memory platforms, including GPU-based platforms.
  • Collaborate with a diversity of researchers at the Berkeley Lab science user facilities to apply techniques to different scientific datasets.
  • May contribute to one or more existing research projects in the Data Analytics & Visualization, projects that involve machine learning software development for scientific image analysis.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on October 2, 2020.

  • This is a full-time, 1 year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • This position will telework initially (but is limited to individuals residing in the United States), tentatively until September 2021 due to COVID-19. Once the Bay Area shelter-in-place restrictions are lifted, work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.

How To Apply

  • Experience writing software in one or more of: C++, Python.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a large distributed team and communicate clearly and effectively.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in computer science, applied mathematics, or related field.
  • Record of scientific publications in machine learning, data analysis.
  • Software products/artifacts/releases of ML-based methods.
  • Experience developing scalable software capable of running in parallel on large-scale high performance computing platforms.
