Unfortunately there was little that could be done about this.  Red Hat
7.0 shipped in September 2000, I think.  Python 2.0 was in the beta
state at the time, and 2.0final was released on October 16th.
Assuming the next Red Hat release will be 7.3 and not 8.0, that means
Python 2.2.1 can certainly get into 8.0, and maybe 2.3 will even be
done by then.
