I recommend to reinstall the Python 1.5 RPM (with force), then install
the Python 2 RPM included in your RedHat release (I believe there is
one, although I'm not sure).

If you absolutely want to install Python 2.2, you could either install
it into a different prefix (say, /usr/local), or install with "make
altinstall" (this will create /usr/bin/python2.2, but not
/usr/bin/python).
