As a newbie ;p) I would say : Yes, I think namespace feature should default 
to false.

Shouldn't the default be:
   - "what is simple " (without leaving out anything indispensable)
   - "what is most frequently used"

I had a positive initial experience with Python-XML precisely because of that.
Anyway, this is just a newbie maybe-too-late testimony.
