I don't know about that, but I use the following (Python 2.x list 
comprehension)
    _child_elements = lambda E: [ n for n in E.childNodes
				 if n.nodeType == Node.ELEMENT_NODE ]
and write things as
     for y in _child_elements(y):
        pass
