Thank you David, your code answers my question exactly. Now I have to 
massage it to fit into my present class.

In the meantime, I have another example from Chatgpt which, while it 
doesn't match my original question, works well. It uses functions that 
I've not seen before so now I'm searching the Internet for their meaning.
