These are really good, comprehensive tips Chris.  Did you just knock  
these out for this email?  I'll be flagging this message for future  
reference.

For fun and to refresh my memory I looked up some of Edward Tufte's  
tips.  Here's a list summarized by someone else:

Some of Tufte's ideas are at odds to Chris' suggestions but worth  
thinking over.

I'd highlight his point about not apologizing.  It's a bad habit I  
have and I've noticed it a lot in others.
