I moved the SpamBayes repository to Git yesterday though: https://github.com/smontanaro/spambayes If you have some friends who are interested in working on something like this, point them in that direction. Note to Windows/Outlook users: if you know some people with Windows installer and Python experience, here's their chance to improve your virtual life as well... I'm running Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1 with Office 2010 (both 64-bit) and installed SpamBayes 1.1a6. When I install it, everything looks like it completed successfully, but when I open Outlook, it doesn't work. I'm not getting any error messages for it, it just isn't there. I read through the troubleshooting guide and searched online, but did not find anything that helped. Here is what I have found (or not found) so far: I looked for the log file, but did not find one. I also searched my hard drive for anything with SpamBayes in the name, but did not find any log files. I went into Outlook, to the COM Add-Ins section, and SpamBayes was not listed. I ran the outlook_addin_register.exe file in the SpamBayes/bin directory, then SpamBayes was in the COMS Add-Ins section and checked, but was still not loaded in Outlook 2010. I restarted Outlook, then checked the COM Add-Ins again. This time it was there but un-checked. When I selected it, at the bottom of the box it said "Load Behavior: Not loaded. A runtime error occurred during the loading of the COM Add-in." After I checked it, I tried restarting Outlook again, and it was again un-checked. I re-checked the box, then restarted Outlook again, but it still did the same thing. I verified that I am logged in as an administrator, and the SpamBayes folder is set to allow Full-Control. Just to make sure, I set it to allow Full-Control for everyone, but it did not make a difference. I checked the DEP settings, it is set to "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only" I also tried installing SpamBayes in C:\SpamBayes instead of the default folder, and then went through all of the above steps again, but it made no difference. I'm hoping someone can help me with this, let me know if anyone has any ideas or if you need additional information, thanks! Edward D. Message-ID: At the urging of a SpamBayes user and after consulting with my chicago at python.org compadres, I created a Git repository for SpamBayes on GitHub: https://github.com/smontanaro/spambayes If you know anybody who would be interested in working to solve the Windows-related issues in SpamBayes, please direct them there. They can contact me off-list (skip at pobox.com) or check the bug tracker on SourceForge: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=61702&source=navbar to find out what needs doing. Basically, various combinations of Windows and Outlook don't work. I think it may be related mostly to 64-bit Outlook. Some of the information on the net is a bit too technical for me. I've used Spambayes in the past and loved it. However, since moving to windows 7 (64 bit) and outlook 2010, I have been unable to install the program successfully. The installer seems to go through the motions (I've installed 1.1a6 to c:\spambayes as suggested), but there's no toolbar in outlook. Does this have to be added manually (how?) or is there no support for outlook 2010? Thanks and I hope you can help as I've missed not having your program. If you're running the 32-bit version, there are some people who have gotten it working, so you should be able to make it work. If you're running the 64-bit version of Outlook, then it sounds like you're having the same issue that I'm having. Unfortunately, so far I haven't heard from anyone who has it working with that setup, although Skip is looking for someone to give him some assistance with the Windows side of the things. There's a discussion on SourceForge.net regarding this as well, here's the url for that: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=3604751&group_id=61702&a tid=498103 If you are running the 32-bit version of Outlook, you can do a search on SourceForge for specific instructions on how to make that work. You will need to download the SpamBayes source distribution so you get the test environment and are able to easily make changes to the code. I recently created a Git repository at GitHub: https://github.com/smontanaro/spambayes You can just clone that repository. If you make changes to the code you would like incorporated into SpamBayes, you can create a pull request when you are ready. Once you've downloaded the code you should familiarize yourself with the tokenizer code in spambayes/spambayes/tokenizer.py. (You can ignore everything in the website directory.) The tokenizer file contains many detailed comments about what did and didn't work when SpamBayes was originally developed. Arabic text will be full of non-ASCII characters. Search for "highbit" and "8bit" to decide how you want to handle that. I'm pretty sure you will have to modify that code. Also, if Arabic text uses something other than an ASCII space char to separate words you will have to fix that. It's unlikely you will need to modify the classifier, at least initially, but it will pay to read through that heavily commented code as well. The output of the tokenizer step is the input to the classifier. Knowing how to set its parameters will help when testing. Familiarize yourself with spambayes/TESTING.txt to learn how to test your changes. Finally, you will need fairly large collections of spam and ham emails. The TESTING file should describe the requirements there.
