SpamBayes mysteriously stopped working on my Vista with an crash during the startup of Outlook 2003 saying "Microsoft Office Outlook has Stopped Working." Multiple reinstalls did not fix the error. What solved this problem was changing a setting in DEP (Data Execution Prevention) - see Microsoft topic (http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/1d9bb9b4-f6ba-466d-ac2b -7b8c4f8361611033.mspx). By changing this setting to "Essential Windows programs and services only" and then rebooting, Spambayes did fire up but gave a new error "There was a Problem Starting Spambayes...Try restarting Outlook." Deleting the configuration did not help, nor did copying a "good/previously working" configuration to the proper data directory. This particular error was solved on my system by turning off Vista's User Account Control" In the Control Panel, run "User Accounts" and click the link "Turn user account control on/off". By unchecking this option and rebooting the computer, SpamBayes works wonderfully...of course now I've turned off everything on Vista that was meant to protect my system...but who cares? :~) SpamBayes works! Now I hope someone smarter than me can provide a solution where these options can be turned back on and still have SpamBayes function correctly. DEP execution does allow an option to turn on DEP protection for all EXCEPT exe's that you designate. I tried this setting by putting Outlook.exe in the exeception list, but this did not solve the SpamBayes error. SpamBayes does not have an .exe, right? I attached a sample of these mails. I'm assuming you're using Outlook. If not, please write back and let us know some more details about your configuration. In the SpamBayes dropdown menu you should find an item labeled "Show spam clues for current message". These clues are the most important information for determining why a message scored the way it did. Select one of the incorrect emails while it is still in possible spam, and *before training on it* choose the "Show spam clues" command. This will generate an email message that you can address to spambayes at python.org and submit for us to look at. Large attachments like images (or recorded messages) will usually be discarded, but if the message is still too big to send then you can delete the section labeled Message Stream before forwarding. If these emails always come from the same sender then you might also consider setting up an Outlook rule. SpamBayes doesn't support "whitelisting" (allowing all mails from a specific sender), but you can create a rule in Outlook to move all messages from this sender to a separate folder that is not processed by SpamBayes. In the default SpamBayes configuration, Outlook rules should be processed before SpamBayes analyses the message. If not, look for the "Advanced" tab in SpamBayes Manager and select "Enable background filtering". -- Kenny Pitt From paul at paulenders.eu Thu May 3 19:11:09 2007 From: paul at paulenders.eu (Paul Enders) Date: Thu, 3 May 2007 13:11:09 -0400 Subject: [Spambayes] Office 2007 Message-ID: <000101c78da6$0fad6d60$49faed80@penderst43> Did anybody try SpamBayes in combination with Outlook 2007 yet? I use Windows XP, and OutLook. I need the Spambayes OutLook Addition, and you do also. I see the toolbar, but I also see Spambayes on the Program Menu, and the OutLook addition shows there. Be sure you have the Outlook addition installed as well as Spambayes. Close Outlook and re-open it just for good measure and to let OutLook "see it". Look for toolbar. Toolbar might now be present, but may not be enabled yet. I frequently make the mistake of moving my Junk Mail folder to a Spam Samples folder instead of just moving trapped messages. When I do that, I must 1) move it back, 2) re-identify that folder in "filtering" on the Spambayes config as where to put bad stuff, and 3) re-enable Spambayes to operate. I usually forget to re-enable and must do that. I do not need to re-generate filtering rules, however, so this restoration is pretty quick. Something in that description may help fix your problem. I've re-installed Spambayes a few times with no great difficulty when I install the OutLook addition also. I have other problems with the Spambayes and OutLook interface... That's actually a pretty typical result. When people report that they are having problems training the filter to handle certain types of messages, the most common cause is that the training database has become significantly "unbalanced". After you've been training the filter for a long period of time, you may notice that you've trained significantly more spam messages than good, or vice versa. That can negatively impact the accuracy of the filter in general, but it can also make training more difficult because you have to overcome the imbalance before the filter will be able to classify the new type of messages correctly. -- Kenny Pitt From kvbwzrvqesuoa at yahoo.com.hk Sun May 6 00:28:33 2007 From: kvbwzrvqesuoa at yahoo.com.hk (=?GB2312?B?tqG/ydDA?=) Date: Sun, 6 May 2007 06:28:33 +0800 Subject: [Spambayes] =?GB2312?B?ofK85taw1Nq80rS00rXXysHPsbjL9yE=?= Message-ID: <20070505222837.2A3FA1E4002@bag.python.org> An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Balance is overall, not per training run. 1010:1000 would be almost perfectly balanced. I think the concensus is to only train on unsures and mistakes as well. That might reduce the size of your training database significantly. Dave> Q2: Dave> I notice that the incremental training of sb_imapfilter trains all Dave> (as-yet-untrained) hams, then all (as-yet-untrained) spams. Different goals. Yes, the interleaving is only important to the train-to-exhaustion scheme. Suppose I train six messages like this: H S H S H S If I next train a ham in sb_imapfilter it will just update the database with the new info. The tte script scores the message first, and only uses it to supplement the training database if it is scored incorrectly. If these are repeat questions, my apologies in advance - and please point me to where the answers are :) Setup: I have a Linux host, running Exim and Courier-IMAP. I'm mainly using the web-based Squirrelmail to get access to my mails. sb_imapfilter is scheduled to run hourly with "-c -t -v" flags (so: classify, train, verbose). Exim delivers all mail to my Inbox. The Junk folder contains some samples of known spam. The Other folder contains known ham. SpamBayes is set to train with the Other folder as ham, and the Junk folder as spam. It's set to filter the Inbox, moving spam to the Junk folder and unsure messages to "JunkUnsure" Phew! What I don't understand is how SB avoids being self-reinforcing. For example, messageA arrives in the Inbox. It's classified by SpamBayes as being Spam, and is moved to the Junk folder. When SpamBayes next runs, messageA is now in the Junk folder. Because the Junk folder is a training folder, does SpamBayes now assume that messageA is an example of spam that I've put there? Or does it track the fact that SpamBayes itself moved the message to Junk, and therefore it's not a message that I gave it as an example? If messageA is actually ham, does moving it to the "Other" folder and re-running with "-t" change the database entries to record the fact that I've identified the message as being ham? I realise the message may still have the x-spambayes-classification of spam according to the documentation. Alternatively, should I not run regularly with the "-t" flag? Should I occasionally make sure that Junk contains only spam and then run with "-t" once? I *hope* I've managed to explain myself clearly here. If not, let me know and I'll try to explain it differently :) Cheers Richard From mike at ingenious.co.nz Wed May 16 21:35:02 2007 From: mike at ingenious.co.nz (Mike Morrin) Date: Wed, 16 May 2007 20:35:02 +0100 Subject: [Spambayes] Query on how SB trains using IMAP In-Reply-To: <41512.62.172.234.2.1179325989.squirrel@mail.buzzy.info> References: <41512.62.172.234.2.1179325989.squirrel@mail.buzzy.info> Message-ID: <20070516194359.5B2681E4010@bag.python.org> On 16/05/2007, Richard Busby told us: >Hi all, > >I've been setting up SpamBayes for my IMAP server, and I've got a question >regarding the filtering mechanism that I can't find an answer to on the >FAQ or list archives. If these are repeat questions, my apologies in >advance - and please point me to where the answers are :) I think that sb_imapfilter is mainly intended for users who can only access their IMAP as clients. If you administer your own server, then I think that it is better to train the database directly. I am using more or less the configuration described at: http://www.hypexr.org/linux_mail_server.php It is based on postfix and procmail, but I think you should be able to extend the principals to exim. You should use the SpamBayes Manager to confirm that you have set up an uncertain spam folder and that it's the one you think it is. If everything looks good, please provide details about your configuration as described in the troubleshooting guide. ________________________________ From: spambayes-bounces at python.org [mailto:spambayes-bounces at python.org] On Behalf Of Rick Paczkowski Sent: Friday, May 18, 2007 2:43 PM To: spambayes at python.org Subject: [Spambayes] Not Spam??? If you haven't given it some examples of spam and ham messages, it will classify everything as uncertain spam. Take a look in the folder you designated for uncertain spam. If my guess is correct, you'll find all of your messages in there. Select each one and click the "Delete as Spam" or "Recover from Spam" button as appropriate. (I may have the button text wrong; I use a different version.) As you train SpamBayes over time, its accuracy will increase. You should get good results within a day or two. ________________________________ From: spambayes-bounces+jsp=pkc.com at python.org [mailto:spambayes-bounces+jsp=pkc.com at python.org] On Behalf Of Laura B. The SpamBayes log files have nothing in them. Apparently outlook_addin.dll sees a problem and stops SpamBayes from opening. I've tried all manner of things. I've disabled SpamBayes, then removed and reinstalled it. I still get the error. Then I figured a recent Microsoft patch Tuesday had caused the problem, so I proceeded to use System Restore and rolled the computer back. That didn't work. So then I tried renaming the .ini and .db files, thinking maybe a reinstall of clean files would solve the problem. That didn't solve it either. Any ideas? Cordially, Kristofer J. I looked for a solujtion on the net and found the following link, which to be correct: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Office_Productivity/Groupware/Outlook/Q_21765566.html Since this page is available only to subscribers of experts-exchange, let me quote it: "What was happening was that from within IE when trying to 'send link by email' or 'send page by email', I was getting a Microsoft Office Outlook dialog box that said "The operation failed". After some testing I discovered that the SpamBayes anti-spam plug-in installed was causing Outlook to not close completely after the Outlook process was launched by trying to send a link from IE. To see if this is the problem, close all Outlook windows then look at your task manager to see if you see an Outlook process. If you see any, kill them. Then in IE (with Outlook closed) try to send a link again. It may work once, but if you look at task manager you'll notice the process still there. And if you try to send a second link, it gives an error. If these are the symptoms you are seeing, go into your Outlook options and disable all the 'COM Add-Ins' and items in the 'Add-In Manager'. See if this fixes the problem then enable the plug-ins one by one to find the culprit". Is there a way to instruct SB to quit altogether from the system when MS Outlook closes? The absense of this complete closure seems to be the cause for the reported problem. There are some other (mailto) where it does not, but unfortunately we aren't aware of what is causing this. But recently we had a lot of spams coming trough and saw that the spamdb.db filesize stays at 82.040 KB ! Normally after training the filesize always grows. We've started with a new database, however after 2 weeks the filesize stays at 20.680 KB. Spambayes still functions ok but we feel we can't update the database anymore ... I guess this a software problem because of the filesize (just about 20GB and 80GB) Has anyone seen this before, any suggestions is welcome. -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Maarten Vanachter Verantwoordelijke Informatica informatica at scoutsengidsenvlaanderen.be 03/231.16.20 From skip at pobox.com Tue May 29 14:16:07 2007 From: skip at pobox.com (skip at pobox.com) Date: Tue, 29 May 2007 07:16:07 -0500 Subject: [Spambayes] spamdatabase doesn't grow anymore In-Reply-To: <465BE5D3.2050207@scoutsengidsenvlaanderen.be> References: <465BE5D3.2050207@scoutsengidsenvlaanderen.be> Message-ID: <18012.6535.936528.269840@montanaro.dyndns.org> Maarten> and this has worked very goeed for a long time. Maarten> I guess this a software problem because of the filesize (just Maarten> about 20GB and 80GB) 20 & 80 kilobytes or 20 & 80 gigabytes? Big difference! In any case, note than many of the database file formats implement on-disk hashes. Thus they greatly overallocate space to support efficient key lookup and insertion. Also, after awhile you probably see very few actual new keys. Most of the time when you train you're probably just adjusting the counts on already seen keys. It's thus not suprising that the absolute file size doesn't change (or actually changes very slowly). To see if the file contents change after you train a message, try comparing the checksum of the file before and after training. I don't know what's available on Windows. On Unix/Linux/Mac systems the cksum command does the trick: % ls -l hammie.db -rw-rw-r-- 1 skip staff 1326002 May 21 07:27 hammie.db % cksum hammie.db 3591908501 1326002 hammie.db Skip From david at berensohn.com Tue May 29 15:18:03 2007 From: david at berensohn.com (david at berensohn.com) Date: Tue, 29 May 2007 06:18:03 -0700 Subject: [Spambayes] Troubleshoot SpamBayes multi-user install on Vista Message-ID: <000001c7a1f3$cb1033b0$61309b10$@com> I am installing spambayes 1.04 on Windows Vista Home Premium with Outlook 2007.
