[Spambayes] POP3 Proxy Questions

Tony,

I appreciate the help.  How I got into this mess was that I originally
started with the plug-in.  It did not appear to want to train itself.  For
whatever reason, when got to my Spam samples to learn from, it would just
sit there and think forever.  Seemed to be a learning disability or
something.

This led to scouring the Spam Bayes documentation and miscellaneous
approaches to installation.  I latched upon the POP3 server as a potential
issue and have been screwing around with it ever since.

At this moment, I have it installed on Outlook in probably some perverted
installation, but it does appear to be working.  So at this moment, I will
keep an eye on it and see how it goes.  Wit a little luck, it is a happy
camper and I shall be cruising along.

Thanks again.  I will let you know if I still find myself in a muddle.

If you run from a command line "pop3proxy_service.py debug", then it will
output any error messages to the console window.  These would probably have
clues about what's going wrong.  I think (but am not sure) that running the
service from source redirects output to the SpambayesServiceN.log files in
your temp directory ('c:\documents and settings\[username]\local
settings\temp', most likely).  Either should get you the error text.

Does using sb_server.py (i.e. running without the service) work?  What about
pop3proxy_tray.py?  (which figures out whether to use the service or
sb_server, although probably not cleverly enough to use sb_server if the
service gives an error).

If you let us know what the error output is, we can probably figure it out;
however:

Is there a reason that you're wanting to use the service?  From the
description of what you want, it really seems that you want the Outlook
plug-in (and it would be odd for anyone using Outlook 2000 to prefer the
service over the plug-in).  It doesn't utilise the proxy server, but do you
really need it to?

I'm pretty sure that what you want to do is forget about all the stuff
you've done so far, download the installer for the Outlook plug-in, run the
installer, open Outlook, go through the configuration wizard that it
presents you, and you're done.

(If you want to run the plug-in from source, then what you want to do is run
the script "addin.py" which is in the Outlook 2000 directory).

Sorry if this is a confusing answer, but I'm a bit confused about what you
want to do!
