   Does anyone know of a Python text-based HTML renderer (or just an HTML table
   renderer) that could help in trapping them?

It's not python-based (i.e. you have to shell out to it) but 

     lynx -dump -stdin  

will render from standard input to standard output (essentially HTML --> TXT)
and then gracefully exit.

It's what I use.  :)
