Initial Comment: Outlook 2003 on Exchange Server 2000 SpamBayes v 1.0.4 I have been using SpamBayes for a long time, with no problems. Yesterday it started to act up and I uninstalled it, removed its toolbar in Outlook, and reinstalled it. The install seemed to go fine, but when I try to select the folders to train on, I cannot get my mailbox to expand. When I click on the + sign, nothing happens. When I try to check my in box, I am told that it is a top level folder and to select a child folder. But I cannot get to my child folders.... Any help would be appreciated! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Date: 2006-04-02 23:31 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=552329 This was a problem with the version of pywin32 at the time, and has been since fixed (so 1.1a2 will include the fix, or if there is a 1.0.5 that will include it). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498103&aid=1449691&group_id=61702 From noreply at sourceforge.net Sun Apr 2 13:32:25 2006 From: noreply at sourceforge.net (SourceForge.net) Date: Sun, 02 Apr 2006 04:32:25 -0700 Subject: [spambayes-bugs] [ spambayes-Support Requests-1425590 ] never filters Message-ID: Support Requests item #1425590, was opened at 2006-02-07 09:47 Message generated for change (Comment added) made by anadelonbrin You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498104&aid=1425590&group_id=61702 Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. >Category: None >Group: None >Status: Pending Priority: 5 Submitted By: Monica (ss7guru) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: never filters Initial Comment: Spam Bayes NEVER filters now. Although my solution isn't going to identify the culprit, I have had a fix. 1) Since I needed XP only for Access, I uninstalled all of 2003 and XP including all add-ins. 2) I deleted all of the Microsoft Office folders in Program Files. 3) I went through the registry and deleted all keys related to Microsoft Office (unless they looked innocuous or clearly like they were related to Office 11 (since they would be coming back anyway). 4) I then reinstalled XP but limited it to Access and Visual Basic. 5) I then reinstalled every piece of 2003. I let the OfficeUpdate website update to SP2 and all other necessary updates (security and junk filters mostly). 6) Then I installed SpamBayes and MailAlert (the two add-ins). It has worked since. Although I must admit that I still hold my breath each time I press the "Spam" button to move any new Junk from the Suspected Junk folder. So far, so good. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: TJS (tjsortho) Date: 2006-02-04 05:04 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1442774 In my case, renaming the entire folder was the way to go, but I suspect that the real culprit was that it was loading the Office10 version of outlvba.dll from the office10\addins folder - just a guess. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: DBurk (dburk) Date: 2006-02-03 16:36 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1420863 Thanks to everyone for working through this. So I use the pop3proxy version of SpamBayes (binary, no Python installed). After some months of working without any problems, Eudora hangs while retrieving messages. The progress bar appears and the last message shown is e.g. "1 message(s) left to download". I used a packet analyzer to see what happens on my network and saw the normal questions and answers (USER, PASS, LIST and RETR). The remote mailserver answers the RETR request correctly by sending the message. But when I do this manually (with a "telnet 127.0.0.1 110" command), there is no answer after the RETR command. It simply hangs. I therefore am convinced that nor Eudora, nor the remote mailserver is the cause of this problem. It's in your temp directory (possibly C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Temp). If you set the option [globals] verbose to True (put the lines: [globals] verbose:True in your bayescustomize.ini file), then you'll also end up with a _pop3proxy.log file that contains a complete copy of the POP3 transactions. Initial Comment: I am using Windows XP, with all updates, and Outlook 2003. Spam Bayes had been working with no problem. I have Binary version 1.0.4. Then problems arose which I could not solve using the suggestions on the troubleshooting guide regarding nonfunctioning buttons. Here is the problem: The "Delete As Spam" button ceased working. I thought Spam Bayes was otherwise working, so I followed those instructions in the troubleshooting guide, including eventually deletion of the "dat" file. The buttons were rebuilt but still did not work. It then occurred to me that actually Spam Bayes was not filtering reliably either, because it seems to me there is a much higher proportion of messages in the suspects folder than the junk folder, than had been true in the past. I consulted the log file as indicated in the troubleshooting guide, and it appears to me that the log file is indeed reporting errors. E.g., here are two excerpts from the log file: 1. WARNING: Bayes database has 4240 messages, but training database has 4071 pythoncom error: Python error invoking COM method. 2. bsddb._db.DBRunRecoveryError: (-30982, 'DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery -- fatal region error detected; run recovery') Moving and spam training message 'In debt you can get help today' - Training on message 'In debt you can get help today' in 'Ira Ellman/Junk Suspects - pythoncom error: Python error invoking COM method. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: TJS (tjsortho) Date: 02/03/06 08:04 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1442774 In my case, renaming the entire folder was the way to go, but I suspect that the real culprit was that it was loading the Office10 version of outlvba.dll from the office10\addins folder - just a guess. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: DBurk (dburk) Date: 02/02/06 19:36 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1420863 Thanks to everyone for working through this. Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Skip Montanaro (montanaro) Assigned to: Tony Meyer (anadelonbrin) Summary: note runs of short words Initial Comment: I've recently been seeing a lot of pharmacy spam with few, if any, clues. The message bodies look like this: X j A m N j A d X h M k E z R d I p D u I m A c C o I d A t L j I v S j A j M w B p I q E s N p V a I a A g G z R j A f S b O n M u A p V f A g L m I h U q M b S u A u V o E q n O t V y E n R d r 7 b 0 k % d x W c I n T p H d u O s U h R i b S s H q O p P h ! k http://www.chilreanno.com Followed by some drivel meant to boost "good" words. The URL changes frequently, and like most spam, it seems to come from all over the place, so there are very few clues present for SpamBayes to munch on. The attached patch pays attention to runs of words which are too short for other consideration and emits a token that's the base 2 log of the longest run of such words seen in the message. The result seems to add an extra useful structural token to the mix and makes these particular types of spam less likely to score unsure. I didn't just check it in for a couple reasons. One, I was targetting just a single kind of message. I'm not anxious to get into a SpamAssassin-type escalation of, "hey, this kind of message does this, let's try that", sort of thing. I'd prefer it if the concept was applicable to a broader variety of spams. Two, I no longer have any sort of test database other than my current personal collection of ham and spam (between 300 and 400 messages), so I can't really test it properly to see if it's a net win. Like I said, it seemed to help in this instance.
