I use searchsorted for that.

In [5]: tab = 2**arange(30)

In [6]: tab[tab.searchsorted(10)]
Out[6]: 16

In [7]: tab[tab.searchsorted(81)]
Out[7]: 128

Is there a similar build-in function in numpy/scipy ?
