odd -- is this what you get when you start up python all by itself:

$ python

however, what I would do is use distutils to install your custom stuff, 
rather than doing it by hand. All you need is a simple setup.py file.

If your stuff is under active development, then use setuptools, and:

$ python setup.py --develop

that will put links to your stuff in site-packages, pointing to your 
code, so when you change things, the changes will show up everywhere.
